Tail Clicky for Preon 1?
on:
May 09, 2015, 05:45:32 PM
I have a Four Sevens Preon 1 and am about 90% happy with it.
One of the things i don't like is the difficulty of turning on the light when my hands are even slightly wet, and in any case, it's pretty much always a two-handed operation. You can get the tail clicky button for them, which i think come standard on the Preon 2, and I'm wondering if anyone out there has either upgraded their 1, or has a 2, and what their thoughts are on this. I plan to bag carry it, so the biggest possible problem i see with pocket carry, accidentally turning on and draining the battery, isn't a big concern for me.
Thoughts?

I have a new preon 2, I would trade the tail.
I know that foursevens changed the threads at some point in time but I'm not sure when.

Also, again, the clicky really isn't bad. I've never had mine click on in my pocket, but it has clicked on when I leave it in a waterproof box with enough room to shake.

I've decided to shell out the money and order a clicky tail from Four Sevens. I'll let you all know how I like it once I've had some time to evaluate.

I just got the tail clicky in for my Preon 1. It seems quite solid, has good feel to the button, and switching between modes can be done without fully clicking the button, although I suspect it'll take some time to get used to the exact amount of pressure required.
I'll keep you all informed as to my opinion after some real world testing.

Standard, in red. I have a problem with gear that isn't brightly colored. As I've said a lot in the past, I lost a camouflage flashlight in leaf clutter once, and now try to avoid camo and black at all costs.
The clicky tail cap seems like it's going to be awesome for me. I don't pocket carry, and I think the clicky tail might be a problem if I did, but I bag carry, so no problem.
IT doesn't add much to the overall length, and nothing I can notice to the weight.

Nice light Lynn.
I had the Preon2, one of the last times I saw it, it had grabbed my attention as I felt a slight burning sensation. Yup I had inadvertently turned it on in shirt pocket. January, around 25-30c below doing a winch call on side of highway.
(Drove wrecker for a couple years after taking my tools home,
o/t)
Was my fault, but was a wake up, I used the duraloops, 1000mah in mine an not sure how long it was on but it had got a chance to heat up in between my layers of clothing.
Hot potato, or French fry I guess lol.
I lost it shortly after. Replaced it with a Pelican 1920 for half the price, slightly less otf lumens, but greater battery life an run times. Built like a tank too.
Anyhow, reading your post made me lust for another Preon 1 an 2, for edc rotations. I carry a Mini MA,1910 an 1920 as EDC so the preons would be for dressier clothes.
Help, I've been enabled!?!?!?
Nice edc light Lynn, Have a great one.

Thank you.
It was my first... I guess 'high end' flashlight. Something not available at a local hardware store.
It isn't exactly outdated now, but I think there are better light on the market now, and prices for pretty good lights seems to just keep dropping.
I think I'll stick with the Preon 1, at least for a while longer. The tail clicky sure does make it feel 'newer'. It's still an incredible little piece of technology.

I took my clicky apart and saw what it needs to be able to function right. With some cells it was always on till I moved the contacts further back. It's basically press fitted into the rear. Keep it backed out and you will be fine.
If yours is new or you adjust it you will have good success with the P2 clicky, I love my Ti one even though some feel it's not so strong.

I find the clicky on the Preon to be way too weak to prevent accidentally turning it on. Something like the Streamlight Microstream, though perhaps not as stylish as the Preon, has much stiffer clicky that won't accidentally engage. But for EDC, I forego the whole clicky thing and carry a Fenix E05.

I carry my Preon in what is I assume supposed to be an ammo pouch on the side of a maxpediton bag. It's clipped to the pouch, and the button is pretty well protected by the pocket flap. I haven't had problems with it yet, but I don't think it'd be ideal for pocket carry.
