mp600 question
on: May 13, 2015, 07:03:34 PM
How do I get one with

  • blunts
  • black oxide
  • scissors
  • awl

How?  Is there a particular variant ineed to look for or is this a mod job only?  Or can you custom order/configure such?

Just off the top of my head I do not think that combination exist for Gerber. I cannot even think of a single Gerber with a awl. I am going to say its a custom job. Good thing is the MP600 is easy to work on.

Sounds like a mod job to me. The awl does exist, but not on many models. The mod could be made with a BO bluntnose MP600 and BO diesel. I prefer the length of the Diesel scissors, and the lobster claw can opener could be used as an awl.

Yeah, that awl is a tough ask.  As Al said; it does exist, mostly on the Fisherman models IIRC, but I'm not sure I've ever seen one in BO.

If you look around you might find a BO MP600 Pro Scout with blunt pliers.  Also have a look for the Bladeless MP600, I think that might suit you.

That's impressive zoidberg!  So what is involved in the mod?  So you can't just buy parts, you have to cannibalize them from other tools?  What's needed to take them apart?

Has anyone snubbed the nose on a BO Diesel?

MP600 Pro Scout with blunt pliers doesn't appear immediately available let alone one in black.

So what is involved in the mod?

You have to find a combination of tools and washers that fit the handle and clear the pliers.

So you can't just buy parts, you have to cannibalize them from other tools?

Correct.

What's needed to take them apart?

I did the first one with pliers.
Now I use an empty handle as a spanner.
And a lighter to heat the loctite.

Has anyone snubbed the nose on a BO Diesel?

I don't know about the Diesel but with the MP600 the stock needle nose has a smaller nut gripping area.
What you really want IMO is the stock blunt nose.

All good mate.  :tu:

Yes the washers also come from the donor tools.

Get three MTs.
From these you can make two MTs, one you want and one for backup.
The third gives you extra washers, some spare replacement tools and a handle to use for a spanner.

It's the same with the diesel. The BN has a thicker width than the needle nose. I wonder if Gerber made blunt nose diesel would that kill sales of the 600? ???

Newer MP400 models use the same tools as the newer MP600 models but not the plier heads.
The one you linked to is an older model known here as mr pinchy, non locking with a different fastener.
I've not had one so don't know about that generation.

I don't see how it's possible to wind up with 2 tools with scissors (out of 3).

Sorry, could you reword that? Also I'm not sure what can be swapped between a Diesel and a MP600.

I'm just trying to figure out how you get 2 tools out of 3 (your words).  Which 3 do you start with?

Forget the diesel, just a guess on my part.

I would want the 2 tools I wind up with to both have scissors and I don't see how that's possible.

But maybe you know otherwise.

Okay, I'm with you now. You choose the MTs that contain the tools you want.

The tools are different thicknesses. If you can make the MT you want from two MTs then great. You take the tools you want and put together a MT. The left over pieces however might not go together for the second MT.

I didn't mean to confuse you with the idea of using three MTs. I just found that the more parts I had the easier it was to find a combinations that work well. By using the third MT as fodder for washers and a fastener spanner it also gives you some spare tools and more options for putting together a decent second MT.

I like 50ft-trad's idea of using Diesel scissors and can opener->awl.
But could it also serve as spanner?

Part way there.  A used army mp600 with scissors.

I wonder if I can just buy a blunt head from Gerber, maybe through warranty.  SOG does that.

Anybody know?

Not as a spanner, it is a different fastener.

Good find. It is a MP400 though, still gives you scissors and a handle spanner.  :tu:

Someone here I believe asked Gerber and they sent him out a replacement plier head but in the wrong finish. I will see if I can find the post.

Thanks for spotting that.  I was hoping for just a head swap but that's not going to happen now.  You can't put a mp600 head on a mp400... or can you?

What's needed to take them apart?

I did the first one with pliers.
Now I use an empty handle as a spanner.
And a lighter to heat the loctite.
...

So I will end up with a blunt nose mp600 and the previously mentioned mp400 to be cannibalized.  Please explain using the handle as a spanner.  Is it the plier side of the handle or the tool joint side?

Have a look at this thread.

If it still doesn't make any sense I'll attempt to explain it.

Here's another one.

Gerber Multiplier mangling

I didn't bother making actual spanners, I left the handles complete and just pull the locking tab back when using it.
