What's your favorite carry combo?
on: May 21, 2015, 05:04:12 PM
And why?
PM me if you want one of my kidneys for your SOG TiNi multitool.

OK, both my kidneys.

I've been trying something new recently with my PST and Rebar (& Rambler on keys).

Although a little redundant, I like having 2 sets of pliers.

The wire cutters on the PST are my goto for many cutting tasks including nylon ties and straps.

I use the knife blades on both, but really dig the blade on the PST the best.

I prefer the file of the PST, as it is much smoother.

The Rambler is great for its T&T, file and scissors, which I use for fingernail maintenance.

I think I prefer the awl on the PST to the Rebar's. Another thing they got right the first time  :salute:

I prefer the locking Phillips on the Rebar, although the PST's is good too.

Both are so light-weight I barely notice them on my belt.

No nonsense, light and simple. More of a weekend setup with Sideclip and dragonfly. I call it my favorite because is not a work week carry. I'll punisnh myself with heavy carry during the week and look forward to a clipped leatherman and some Superblue Full Flat Ground goodness. Plus the two tools wont pull my boxers down with weight.  :ahhh

CT-29 and Boker Tactical Roper.

The knife covers about 80% of my needs, for the rest I either use the CT's bits or the large flat.

Skulletool + Micra =
Great knife (a little short but enough for daily tasks)
great scissors (can't ask more on a pair of MT scissors)
decent pliers (more than I need)
A wide array of drivers
Easy and comfortable to carry, skulletool in pocket Micra in sheath

I don't really have one. A Tinker or Crater C33T and a pair of Vise Grips/Electrician Scissors in my work bag seems to work okay.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I'm still digging the Rebar and PST but thinking of changing it up a tad with a PST2 for the larger scissors.

Combos eh? You want me to talk about my combos? You sure?

OK then  :D :D :D

The most comprehensive of mine actually lives in a Maxpedition EDC Micro pouch. This is a bit of a "grab and go" kit which I reach for if friends or family shout with a problem, but I probably wont need to take the full toolbag. It doesn't carry everything, but it does carry things I trust and has proved very useful. It has evolved quite a bit over time, but I am really quite happy with it in it's current version.

Click on the spoiler for a brief summary of some of the key items included

Show content
TurboDiesel Mod
Bit kit
Metal cutting jigsaw blades
Boker Plus XS
1 metre tape
Duck Tape
Swann Morton scalpel knife
Clipper lighter
Rite In The Rain pen
Sharpie
Fenix PD20 with lantern attachment and suspension clip
Bahco 4" Adjustable spanner
Superglue
Assorted dressings
Fresnel Lens

I do have several other sheath based combos built up too

The BG one is the standard off the shelf kit, and yes I would happily throw this in a pack if I was going for a hike, so long as I wasn't expecting it to be an overnighter or anything that would prompt me to take something more hardcore. For what it is, it's perfectly fine as a lightweight "just in case" set up. I have used it several times and am quite happy with it.

Maybe for an overnighter, I might consider going up a notch to my own version, based around my Fuse-ilier mod. There are several peripherals to this combo, not all of which are shown. Missing from the pic is a Silva Ninox headtorch which goes in a pocket, and an Exotac firestarter and storm whistle which would go on a lanyard around my neck and under my shirt.

The other two sheath combos are not as comprehensive, but get occasional carry time too.
(Click the spoiler to see inside)

Most of the time though, my combo will just be pocket carried. Sometimes it will be tried and tested combinations such as these smaller combos which again are quick to grab and go if it's just a night out for a meal or suchlike

Larger pocket combos have proven themselves over time too. A KF4 (despite my aversion to the Juice line) works quite nicely with an 84mm Golfer

Another proven one that I have been carrying a heck of a lot lately is the Sideclip and Original Outdoorsman. I like this combo so much, I have a spare of each

Another that comes into play every so often, is a Yeoman or Voyager Lite with a 4" pair of Vise Grips (also works well with my knifeless Gerber Octane mod)

A lot of the time though, it will be a case of grabbing one of my urban tools or mods, and just grabbing whatever accompanying SAK the mood dictates

Choosing a favourite though is next to impossible, as it depends what I am doing. For example, here is my favourite gardening combo

Which one did I carry today? This one!

Props to 50ft-trad, very well thought out combos.  I really enjoy the process of pairing tools that complement without much overlap.

Woods combo, PST II and SAK Bushcrafter, usually with with Mora.

Skeletool CX and "Super Cadet" w/ Wenger scissors

LM Mini and Super Tinker

Newly paired Mechanic and Micra

Traditional slip joint (usually Case Texas Jack) and Squirt PS4

And my most often carried combo, Pioneer and Style PS

I'm still tweaking my car kits, one so far based around a LM Crunch and Vic Outrider, the other a Super Tool 300, Vic OH Trekker, and LM Style CS.

Vic Super Tinker and IDL T10

The T10 is mostly for the pliers, but has a few other tools to supplement the Super Tinker, like a small philips, nail file, and very small flathead. The Super Tinker is for the two blades, great flathead (used mostly for light prying tasks), and all the other goodies that come with 91mm vics. So far, the combo has worked very well.

While my testing has shown that I could get scissors with more heavy duty cutting ability, the need for that is pretty rare, and in lighter tasks, the Vic 91mm Scissors are excellent.

EDIT: I should say this is my favorite combo AT THE MOMENT. Subject to change without notice if I come up with something better. :D

The Skeletool and Style CS.

I haven't found anything else that works better for me.  I'm irretrievably bonded with the Skeletool, but I also often use scissors, tweezers, and a long screwdriver to turn recessed screws.

The Style could *possibly* do the job, but I like the design of the CS' scissors better.  Nail nicks and I don't get along that well.

My carry must be comfortable in the pocket and i try to avoid clips as much as possible ...and I have a low threshold for what I consider comfortable. So my carry is largely dictated by the kind of pants that I'm wearing. I can't figure out how to post inline pics from my phone so I'm going to do a separate post for each carry. 5 posts to follow.

This one is my favorite. If I'm wearing jeans this is what I'm carrying.  Skele in back pocket with handkerchief keeping it up right...piece of rubber in the caribeener for light hammering. Manager/Brewzer in coin pocket. Preon clipped on to a slit that I cut on the inside of my front pocket. Would like to replace the Manager with a custom 3 layer, bladeless, Alox 84mm but can't find a modder.

I wear slacks to work so the carry has to be as light as possible. Pioneer in back pocket with handkerchief keeping it upright. Alox Clasic is ridiculously thin and the difference in slacks is noticeable compared to the Manager.

My summertime/shorts carry as of 1 hour ago. Shaped the Harvesters bottle opener in to a flat Phillips driver. If I'm not wearing cargo shorts then I might swap the Harvester  for the Pioneer so that I can do the back pocket trick (which requires the lanyard)..but like having the saw this time of year. Haven't tested the squirt much yet, but amazed by the size/utility ratio.

This is my carry when I know I'm going to be doing work. MUT has scissor/tweezer mod and dyed plastic thought of by other members. Also grinded the punch in to a mini screw driver. LOVE the MUT and don't think its shooter specific at all after some mini-mods.

If I'm lounging in sweatpants or gym shorts then this all goes in the front right pocket. Prefer the style to the 58mm SAKs as a standalone tool (but don't like the scissors as much)...plus it was the first multitool I ever bought so I have to keep it in the rotation somewhere
