stay glow scales for swiss champ?
on: May 28, 2015, 10:20:36 PM
my swiss champ has had a hard life over the last couple years that i have had it. after dropping it on the tile a couple weeks ago (not its first fall) a scale popped off, lost my pen and toothpick. the scale was super glued on already from it coming off on previous falls. its really just time to replace them.

I like the stay glow idea. and the nylon (thats why its made of right? or wrong?). but cant seem to find any for sale. i did see a photo of a swiss champ with them on there, and it seems that it didnt have the toothpick pen, etc. i plan to replace what is missing as i use it all. do they make the stay glow scales for the swiss champ with the slots for the pen and everything?

I got my stay-glow scales by buying a Climber off of ebay with the scales on it, then swapped.

Yes, they are nylon. This makes them VERY friendly for scale swapping without getting overly loose.

As far as I know, there are no Plus stay-glow scales, but my knowledge is finite on this matter. So, you will either have to mod, or go without the pen.

StayGlow scales do not have a recess for the pen: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=39140.0
And AFAIK the scales are not for sale.
You have to buy a StayGlow knife (Spartan, Climber, Huntsman), then you can swap the scales to your SwissChamp.

Thanks fella's. any idea how hard it is to cut the slot yourself? im fairly handy, and im not needing it to look perfect. its mainly about function. the glowing scales would make the knife easier to find and operate in the dark. which i seem to do more then one would guess.

EDIT: read the link. seems its not as easy as it would seem. still going to look into it.

I think it could be milled pretty easy with a dremel. The nylon is softer and not as brittle as the celador plastic.

If you give it a shot, post pics. I'd love to see how it's done.

I tried it with red nylon scales, didn't work because the scales are too thin, I removed just a little too much material (visible in the upper left corner of the pic).

Yes it does work, but you can easily damage the scales if you are not careful. Scales are a bit too thin to make it work well.
