  • Look at all those shiny sharp things.
I vote for blanket. Other colours are too bright for what you put in there. Bright colours will take your eye off of your knives.

I vote blanket too. Well, that is, I like the color, nice and neutral (hey, there's probably a "neutral" and "Switzerland" joke in there somewhere). But destroying the blanket... sounds like a no-no.
Can't you get any grayish felt?

I think green felt will look best with the mahogany.

Definetly the Swiss Army blanket.
Best in contrast and congenial to the Soldiers.

Putting something on its contrasting color generally serves to highlight the color, which is why green is normally good for displaying SAKs. However the old fiber handles are brown, which is a mix of green and red. Either color could work, but I would probably go with the red, for its warmer feel. The blue is too dark, and the grey is drab and makes anything on it appear drab.

The green.....or if not, then the blanket.

The blanket though won't have harmful chemicals in it that may not agree with the scale materials? Dunno. Just a thought.

I think green because although the red looks great, the knife photo which is showing a slight reddish background on my phone doesn't give enough contrast with the handle colour. Cheers.

  • Any tool is better than nothing. Some not by much
I voted green felt. It should make most of the colors of scales pop nicely. High contrast, easy visibility, and classic for a classic style knife.

I voted other.
While green felt is a classic and the blanket would look good, I want to suggest using an old swiss tent / tarp. Just because I like the idea. I don´t even know how Swiss Army tents look(ed).
The blanket is my 2nd favourite. I´d part the display area about 1/3 from  the lower edge with teh red ribbon and leave that area (of the ribbon and cross) empty, I think.
But anyways, I want to see the box when it is ready!

How about black velvet/felt?? And use the blanket with the Swiss emblem to line the lid.
It would show the steel off, give a nice contrast to the fiber scales and compliment the grey lined lid.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I voted Swiss Blanket - It's fitting and will add more to the 'story' of your soldiers on display.

I like that dark grey. Also, love that blade you used to carve the joints.

I think I'd prefer the red felt but all good choices. Beautiful display cabinet that's for sure :tu: :tu:

Well it was a dead heat .....  and I found some vintage green wool felt at the flea market so I had the casting vote :)

First job was to fully strip out the box

Then asked my very understanding wife to cut the felt to fit ..... a keen quilter so she had all the equipment :)

With the felt added

Then made a thin cushion using a bit of card

Then did a dry fit

seems ok

Then it was just a matter of glueing it in and making a nice fat cushion for the lid

And the lock works which is a bonus

Then add my soldiers all 1908 from 21 - 50

Very happy overall need to tidy the cushion in the lid a bit but I think it works :)
