Making fire with my EDC.
on: May 31, 2015, 04:49:59 PM
I have not been able to get into the woods for a long while, so I stopped by my wood pile and see if I could get a fire going. And I wanted do it with my EDC.
Sooooooo, here are some pics.

Now its time to make the big pieces of firewood and make them smaller.

Making some shavings...

Now the fine shaving to light with the ferro rod.

Used the back of my wood saw on my SOG Powerlock to scrape the ferro rod and BOOM! FIRE! Oh yeah! Nate loves fire.

Adding the shaving

Also here is a cool trick to help with starting tinder with a ferro.

Take your wood saw a start sawing on a piece of wood and save the dust.

Then light with the ferro rod.
The pic does not really show the small flame but it is there.

Thanks!
While I was waiting for the fire to die out, I carved a quick fork out.

Great thread mate.

Either that fire took hours to die down, or you're much faster at carving than I am.  I suspect I know which is the case. :D

Do you baton a lot with folders? How do they hold up?

No I don't baton with my folders very much. The SOG Vulcan is one of the few folders that I can baton with and sometimes will. It can take it and will ask for more.

Great thread.

Also, if batoning with a folder, it might be better to leave it unlocked so the locking mechanism doesn't suffer.
