Neck knives.
on: June 02, 2015, 11:49:49 PM
Thought it might be fun to do a thread about neck knives following on from my sub 4 inch Survival knife thread :)

If I were to get one I'd be after one that was a bit of a tank with a 3 inch ish blade and no more than 8 inches overall length, with a skeletonised handle that can take a parawrap :)

My quick short list would be...

Becker Eskabar
ESEE Izula
TOPS Tibo
Ghost Banshee .

I have always been attracted to the Boker Gnome. Surprised I do not own one by now. Maybe sooner than later though. I know its not a high end blade and doesn't use top notch steel, but I like it.

I've always had a soft spot for them too :)

I know I'd find the lack of handle length annoying after a while though :(

This is a neck knife I like. The Buck KAALA S30V steel. 6 3/4" over all 3" blade. The picture is when it was new it looks more used now. It is my camp knife. Maybe not as thick as some but it works for me.

Most definitely. I rarely use a necker so if I did get one it would probably only be worn while fishing or hunting and it would see very little use I assume.

Small neckers like that are for quick cuts and uses. Not really meant to be used for a long period of time. Kinda like a patch knife or 58mm SAK. Great for small stuff and quick uses. Would hate to have to use them for long periods of time.

The H1 steel ARK neck knife from Spyderco looks like it will definitely find uses down here with me.

A combination of rust resistance and always being handy during outdoor activities makes it a winner.

It definitely looks cool. :)

So I ordered one. After holding it a couple of times, I realized I never would want to carry it--one finger grip is not for me (I have big hands).

I put it away for awhile. Last month, went to visit my 15 year old son (lives with his mom). Gave him the Gnome, and he thought he'd died and gone to cool little knife heaven. He's happy with it. So it's a cool collectible  :D

I really like my Cold Steel Mini Pendleton for a small blade. Sure. The blade is not as thick as the Gnome. But much more usable and still pretty light weight. Unfortunately, Cold Steel provided a sheath with crap retention  :-[

I bet he did love it!

I hate crap sheaths, I know corners have to be cut in order to bring a knife to market at a reasonable price, but poor sheaths really can let you down at the worst possible times ::)

How about Fred Perrin Shark?
Very sharp and ergonomic.

Yeah. It's a quality control issue. I have other Cold Steel knives with Secure-Ex sheaths, and they are fine. The Mini Pendleton sheath would be fine if the retention were a little better. Probably at that price point, they aren't checking them well when they come out of the factory.

A replacement blade for a shearer could easily be turned into a necker...

My one and only neck knife is the Mtech 4.75".  Neat little thing IMO.  In fact so neat that I seem to have...errr..."misplaced" it.

Temporarily I hope. :-[

I hate when that happens.

Last time before I went out of town for a week, I noticed my CS Mini Recon folder was sitting out and thought, "I should put that up so it's safe, just on the off chance someone breaks in." It's safe all right. Now I have absolutely no idea where it is.

I'd almost managed to put it out of my head as well.  After all, it's not a knife I use much.  However now that we've started talking about it I'm going to have to go look for it again.

I'd say Ghost Banshee and BK11. Again we gotta think what really counts in this category of knives

Well my criteria would probably differ from most in that I'd be using it as a small survival type knife. If you watch Gideon Tactical on YouTube he puts these little knives through the mill and shows what can be achieved with even small blades :)

Sad to say but over here in the UK any sort of knife garners the wrong sort of attention so anything that can be carried discreetly in the woods is a big bonus. And having something capable of heavy tasks in a compact package is excellent life insurance imo :)

A really stiff lanyard helps in that department, or at least I found that. A friend of mine has a Gnome, without the lanyard its really tiring to use, with the lanyard less so. I'm not saying a lanyard replaces a longer handle but it certainly helps.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.
