UST Camp Ax mod
on: June 14, 2015, 12:22:57 PM
Hi

This was an impulse buy a while ago, handle sucked from day one, mostly just too small for my hands but I also couldn't see it lasting.

First just replaced it with rope, but since I've got (red bull denim) micarta to spare I figured why not....

Out the box:

First mod with rope handles, sheath needed fixing as well:

Rough shaping done, 6mm SS pins:

Much better in hand:

Scales epoxy'ed and pins ground down everything cleaned up with dremmel:

Sanded and washed:

Dry:

Oiled with Balistol:

Wiped down and done, back into my camping box:

Hey Everybody

Update of sorts.....

This little thing is a bit light in the pants for our hard woods, it was meant for my camping box but I kept questioning whether it's worthwhile keeping it in there.

Had to use it a while ago on big pieces of wood, and ended up batoning them to splinters!  8)  :salute:

My feelings have changed completely, I now see it as a light and strong way to demolish wood, and it's a perfect fit for the camping box. Cheap as well

Cheers

Anyway great work on the scales  :tu:.  Its great you were able to find a job for this tool.  Nice when those impulse buys work out.

Fortunately not an impulse buy, just (still) all I could find locally, but you're right, great to find a practical use for it.
