New wire cutters on Skeletool
on: June 21, 2015, 05:56:43 PM
I think I have a little problem here.

My first Skeletool had fantastic wire cutters.  The replacement...doesn't.

They're still dragging, and in fact I think they're getting worse.  The rest of the tool has broken in, but the wire cutters are still causing the jaws to stick closed.  It makes the pliers a pain in the ass to work with.  And, the hard wire notch has a pretty big gap in it, rendering it almost useless.  Used to be, I could cut stranded wire with the hard wire notch, with the new one I can't.

Do I contact Leatherman, or is this par for the course?  I've noticed that the plier head is subtly different in design from my previous one.  Anyone else have experience with recent Skeletools?

I do not know if they have changed it. You can use a file to gently remove the part that sticks, or better yet, get a replacement

Before you return it, take some pics for us. You can't tease saying there is a subtle difference in the design and not show it.  :pok:

^^^ what he said. :pok:

but after you take some pics, I would contact Leatherman. I have a few different Skeletools; one from when they were first released in 2008, one that I purchased new about a year ago, and a couple that are somewhere in between... but none of them have any issues with the wire cutters.

Here are my pliers. On my old ones, the letters were very bold and blurred together, as if the die were wring out. On these, They're very sharp like it's a fresh die. Also, the large circle on the jaws near the knife blade pivot is missing. What alarms me is if I send it to Leatherman now, i might get a ruined one back.
