Leatherman Sidekick Mod
on: June 22, 2015, 09:30:42 AM
G'day,

I always hate starting new threads but didn't want to jump on anyone else's mod thread.

No biggy here I think there are a few around but I had a sidekick laying around not being used and had an itch I needed to scratch so to speak. I wanted to have a go at my first mod and the sidekick was the sacrifice. To be honest I don't like the sidekick so it was an easy choice.

So, removed pliers and second handle.

Added Phillips and flat head drivers into the other handle. And that's really it. I could of fitted the saw in next to the flat head with some minor modding but just got lazy. Couple hours taking my time. The dremel comes into its own with this kind of work.

Enough talk.

Very cool. I've got a couple leathermans coming in the mail only for a couple parts I want. I might try something like this with the leftovers.

How good is the file?

Honestly, I really don't know. I've never wanted to carry the sidekick therefore don't have much real world knowledge on its functionality. The pliers and main blade is all I've used on it.

My opinion, I can't see it working very efficiently due to only having one directional cutting surface.

Perhaps someone else will know for certain.

Thanks!

Though, given I just remembered I have a Wingman floating around, maybe I should just check that oops!

Might to this to my Wingman.

Rossko07, how does the spring loading work for the drivers that you bring across from the other handle?

There is a 'flat spring' used for the pliers on the inside of the handle. Doesn't work as well as the dedicated tool end but if you are handy with a dremel or something similar then you will get it to work. Just have to grind down the tools you intend on fitting in there more or less.

Again, non or the tools actually lock open so for what the tool is. It all works pretty good.

Having actually taken my Wingman apart now. That makes sense. I'll flip the inside tools around to the drivers get the best spring.

Which washer placement did you eventually settle on? This is for the outside as well, I didn't think to record washer placement!

I might have pics of the original washer placement here somewhere. But as Kampfer said, you go with what works. I can help if needed.

Do you have plans for the scissors? Did you end up with an alox? What area of chch are you in?

I used left over washers from the unused handle. Piece of cake.

If you had pictures, that'd be helpful. I went to put the 2 drivers on the non plier head end, but I always found they ended up either too lose, or far too tight and impossible to open.

I didn't end up getting an Alox, the price went a little higher than I'd have liked - I went with a Swisschamp which I found at a great price instead.

I'm in Avonhead - you're Darfield way, right?

Here you go, not the best pics but they were only intended for my own quick reference.

Have a look through this thread if you haven't already, Single-wing Wingman.

I'm interested in the Wingman scissors if you would like to trade or sell them and also have an alox electrician here if that interests you.

And yes, I'm out Darfield way but I do go through town once or twice a week.

Thanks, those are great pics! I've had a good look through the related threads.

I've got no plans for the wingman scissors,  so would be happy to sort something out there :)
