What's Wrong With Leatherman Leather Sheaths?
on: June 23, 2015, 07:36:24 PM
I have been seeing a lot of posts calling Leatherman leather faux leather. I own a Leatherman Core with this sheath:

and I thought that it was fairly nice, real leather. I know that it's not the thickness of the PST sheaths, but it seems fine to me. It certainly isn't plastic from my limited knowledge of leather.

Thanks for any input!

I do not know if people are serious about it be faux Leather, but rather saying it in a joking manner as their leather quality compared to the older sheaths has gone very much downhill.

The new sheaths are much less appealing.

Granted, technology and materials has made some serious advances.

The old sheaths, like this one for a flair, was definetly real leather. No guessing involved.

Yep, the quality of the leather and the rivet job as well just not the same quality as the old ones. I do have a sheath like the one you have for your Core that came with my Pulse is just as good as the older ones.

My ST300 sheath is real leather, as far as I can tell, but does have some elastic/nylon parts on the sides.. which contain small pockets for batteries and torches etc.

I like it!

The worst thing for me about the Leatherman sheaths is often the contents they come with  >:D To be honest, I've never had a problem with a Leatherman sheath IIRC, and have sometimes taken the tool out, and put something else in instead as I liked the sheath more than the tool

I feel the same way about the Spirit, Al. Love the sheath, the tool, not so much.

The Spirit is a nice tool but, It is to damn slippery when wet or oily and the drivers are too polish. Also don't like the ergonomics on it. Just does not feel right, if that makes since. I want to like it, but I can't.

:tu: Mr Whippy has similar issues with it. It's not a tool I would use in an engineering machine shop for the same reason. I think it's an excellent off work tool though. I generally use Leatherman or Gerber for work use

I found this old style wave sheath in the snow at a ski resort, I'd destroyed my original surge sheath and bought a replacement oem model 6months ago. You can clearly see which is in better condition!

Wait, is that the 6mth old Surge sheath or the destroyed one?

I've posted elsewhere on here about my disappointment in the Surge sheath, even posted a review on the LM website. The belt loop broke on me withing hours of having it on my belt. Fixed it with paracord and it is still going ok. I'd be more likely to replace it with the XL Molle sheath or something else than an OEM Surge Leather sheath.

That is the replacement sheath that is now 6months old. The other one was completely unusable and went in the bin after a similar period of time. This one is still mainly cosmetic damage so I'm hoping it lasts long enough for me to choose a skinth and wait for it to be delivered!

WOW! You taking that thing Bull Riding at the Rodeo or something?  That thing is beat to hell.

On another note, what is the torch/flashlight in your sheath? Looks like a Maglite Solitaire from what little I can see.

Just on my belt at work everyday, there isn't anything 'premium' about the quality of leather! It is a solitaire, I need light every now and then and don't trust myself with anything worth more than $10, replaceable is the name of the game here!

Having said that my belt loop has survived fine, so I guess I'm lucky there.

I use a leatherman (new)wave leather sheath (never mind what tool is in it)

It is pretty worn I suppose, but it has not failed yet, and in the time I have been wearing it I have replaced a laptop, a printer, two pairs of boots, brake pads, socks, etc etc etc.

Most of which (except maybe the socks) cost more than a new sheath. So I suppose quality/expected life is relative.

As a rule though (YMMV) Velcro (hook and loop fasteners, if you prefer) does not last as long as what it is attached to, so either go for a different system, or be prepared for a little home stitching when it loses its grip.
