Are you into pocket watches or just wrist watches
on: June 24, 2015, 02:31:14 PM
I have wrist watches -

And pocket watches -

For everyday wear, I like the wrist watches but I also like to add a pocket watch to a nice suit once an awhile.
The pocket watches are mostly family pieces that have been loved and passed down. Seeing a 100 year old piece of machinery ticking away is peaceful.
Do others mix wrist watch collecting with pocket watches?

Wrist, pocket, or belt loop for me  :)

The gold pocket watch is just used for waistcoat carry, the silver pocket watch in jeans. The fob is for jeans of work trousers, but only used occasionally. Wrist watches the rest of the time

 :D :tu: :salute:

I generally cheap watches, as I don't really see the point of spending more than I need to on a time piece. Accurate to within a couple of minutes is good enough for me  :D I bought the Rotary pocket watch when I was studying hypnopsychotherapy, as I red a couple of accounts of people being resistant to hypnosis because the therapist wasn't swinging a watch  ::) Needless to say, I have never used it for that purpose, but have worn it quite a bit over the years  :)

I do like them but they don't mix well with my work and hobbies. I currently only have the one, it was my grandads. Gets worn on special occasions.

I like the Rotary for the mechanics but I'm not a fan of an exhibition front on a pocket watch. My brass colored tanker is a Rotary. The mechanics are fine and seems robust.

Do you mean you don't like the half hunter style? I like the idea that the face is protected, and it actually adds a magnifying glass to the carry on certain watches :D

I'm a wrist watch person, but before he passed my father-in-law gave me a pocket watch, I think I wore it once to something I had to dress up for, but other then that it just sits on my little shelf as a memory to him. I did have some other imitation old pocket watch, but that disappeared  heres a pic to both the wrist watches and pocket watch..

The half hunter being the glass section on the exterior case, it's ok. What I am referring to is the face of the watch. I like the classic look with simple / clean lines.
My grandfather's Waltham is RR certified and if you open the back cover it has 15 inspection marks. Looking at the inner working is like looking back in time.

I used to have a hand full of decent pocket watches, but do not have them anymore. I always wanted a old Hamilton. Possibly a railroad style.

Nice watch mate :hatsoff: I understand what you mean now about mine. I only ever use it on formal occasions though, so for that purpose it works very well

I took to wearing a pocket watch when I was in my teen and learning to run a forge. Lets just say I had a slight mishap that resulted in a nylon band being melted to my wrist because I forgot to take my watch off.
About 4 years ago I started wearing wrist watches again after more than 15yrs because I needed a countdown timer and I wasn't working a forge or any shop anymore for that mater ....I miss it but cant set up here.

Remington Pocket Watch muzzle loader themed logo
Relic Pocket blue face gunmetal clamshell
Casio Aviators Coronagraph watch with slide rule bezel
Timex Expedition with a trilobite weave paracord band and fire steel buckle that is my daily wear.

My choices are meager and utilitarian to say it best, but they serve my needs.
No mechanicals but I've been meaning to get one at some point.

I like pocket watches but the thing is there is not all that much room left in my pockets since I joined this forum. So I think I will have to buy myself a wrist watch when I have some funds left for a time piece...  :D

Hey chako,
That pocket watch with the leather cover is just like the one I had, it had the belt loop and was upside down, so when it opened and you looked down you could read it, nice sized too, it just look old and no bird, it was funny too, one day I opened it up and your exspecting this large gear set and notta, only this little setup like smaller then a quarter with a battery in this large open space, kinda funny, lol..

Yep, it was a cheap one. I bought it back in the days when I didn't have 2 pennies to rub together. It looked nice and was somewhat accurate. No complaints.  ;)
