Eyes red after swimming? It ain't the chlorine
on: June 26, 2015, 07:15:34 AM
Saw this in the news, thought it was hilarious. I'm sure if you have ever swam in a public pool you have experienced this.

Pee, not chlorine, causes red eyes from swimming pools
That so-called chlorine smell is actually a chemical reaction with bodily waste

Chlorine has long had a bad rap for irritating the eyes of swimmers, especially in crowded public pools.

As it turns out, however, it's not the chemical itself turning your eyes red after a swim — it's everything else in the water that chlorine goes in to kill.

Specifically, human urine.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently teamed up with both the Water Quality and Health Council and the National Swimming Pool Foundation to warn the public about health risks associated with summer.

"Smell that 'chlorine'?" reads a fact sheet released by the coalition last month. "It's not what you think. What you smell are actually chemicals that form when chlorine mixes with pee, poop, sweat, and dirt from swimmers' bodies.… These chemicals — not chlorine — can cause your eyes to get red and sting, make your nose run, and make you cough."

As someone who maintained a swimming pool for nearly seven years I actually knew this. :D

Without getting too technical about this, here's basically how it works:  'fresh' chlorine is added to the pool water and will combine with germs to kill them.  The chlorine can now be thought of as partially 'used'.  This 'used' chlorine will actually still act as a disinfectant and go for any more germs.  The problem is that if the 'used' chlorine does this then that's when you get the nasty irritants.  The answer is to make sure that there is always enough 'fresh' chlorine to attack the germs.  So, if you can 'smell chlorine' then the problem is that there actually isn't enough chlorine in the pool.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I haven't gone since grade 4. There is a local wading pool a few blocks from my house. I used to go there all the time, as it is very popular with the local kids. One day, I brought a snorkel and a diving mask. The horrors I saw under the water from my fellow swimmers stoped any inkling of every going into any public pool ever again.  :dwts:

Yup, I worked in the Swimming Pool industry for the past 5 years.
I've written more than a few articles on this.

A well balanced pool or hot tub should NEVER smell like chemicals. Should never have that chlorine smell.
It means you need to balance and shock the water. Shocking more often eliminates all of this.

Plus, chloramines are dangerous to breathe in. Breathing that stuff in a poorly ventilated area is really not a good idea as Chlorine is a Halogen.

Technically we should all refrain from bathing in chlorine anyway. We absorb it through our skin!

The more you know.

It's not the urine or the chlorine I'm worried about...

I have seen one of these signs locally at the community pool.

On the sign in the link they spelled diarrhea wrong.

On the sign in the link they spelled diarrhea wrong.

Actually they didn't.  :pok:

They used the correct spelling for the country where the sign appears.  NZ (like Australia and many other ex-British colonies), use the original (English/British) spelling for words, not the later, simplified USA version of "English" that some North Americans decided to use (deliberately, perhaps to try to distance themselves from their British colonial origins ? ).

I can usually read both without problems, but sometimes I find the USA spelling is a bit jarring (especially when the always-on proof reading sub-routine in my brain chimes in).

Redness may not be caused by chlorine around here.
My neighborhood pool backs up to the bayou and there's a nice "Beware of Gators" sign by the parking lot.  >:D

All I've seen this summer are armadillos and a few small hogs though. They've got parts of the bayou dug up for some waterway project or what not, bothering all the critters. Storms aren't helping either.

Really wish I'd never read this thread

Dad here, takes his son to swim school every week and has done for the past 4yrs.
Son hates it, but dad makes him >:D

So now I'm racked with guilt that I'm forcing that child of mine to bathe in what I now know to be nothing but a vat of wasted bodily fluids!!...Nice  it reeks of chlorine...ughh!!

Explains perfectly why I never see the instructors dunk their heads!!
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Nope. My several hours of multiple love action and sleep mean I only sleep 1h30, 2h a night...
