LED Pocket Work-lights.
on: July 05, 2015, 01:31:07 PM
Am I the only one who loves these things?

I stumbled upon my first one at a local tool shop. What caught my eye was the form factor. These types of flashlights allow you to wear the light on an outside pocket (preferably a shirt pocket or coat). They usually tend to have 5 or more LEDs which equates into a beautiful wide illumination. These are now my go to lights as they are just so convenient.

So far, I have 3 different models, each with different capabilities built in. They are all powered by 2 AAA batteries.

The Grip

This was my first one. Features a strong magnetic base, making this the perfect hands free companion when working around metal objects. This one is dedicated to my ammo locker. It gives off a nice wide beam of light, and is perfect to illuminate the inside of a metallic locker.

No Name
This model does not feature a magnetized base, but does have another neat feature. The pocket clip can swivel 180 degrees. Likewise, the LEDs are hidden behind a diffuser on this model, giving the beam a much smoother appearance.

A closer look at the rotating pocket clip.

PT Power

This model is different as well. This work light features dual beam capability. Press the power button once and the single LED on the end will light (if you need a traditional flashlight feel). Press the button once more, and the single LED light will shut off, and the strip of 6 LEDs on the side will light up. There is also a magnetic base on this unit, but it is rather weak compared to the first model described above.

So there you have it. I find these LED work lights to be very convenient, so much so that I rarely go for the more traditional styled flashlight whenever I need something illuminated at home. I just love their wide room illuminating capabilities.

As an added bonus, using these lights, you can pretend you are part of the MIB group. Just saying.

I love all things weird...which may explain why I like the Schrade NaviTool, or whenever someone asks for an opinion, I may give the odd answer away from the majority. Might also explain why I like these so much. That and they are truly functional, providing whole room illumination, and hands free to boot.  :D

People don't seem to have heard of these :D

Ok, what's the beam like? I mean, is it blue like some of the cheap Chinese lights? (and my latest one :D)

Also, what's the price-range?

For some reason they reminded me that I adored flashlights as a kid, too. There would be none available to me, of course, but then somehow I often managed to get some somehow. Probably saving my school money and buying some crappy keychain light, lol. There were also these crisps snacks things (no idea how to call them) that come in a package and kids can find various cheap toys in them. There wasn't a happier person on the planet when I found lights in there several times :D In various shape and form :D Some in the shape of old mobile phones and instead of a screen, you get a bulb :D *memories*

The light on all of these is white, and the price is very cheap. Usually range from 20 bucks down.

Found another today...this one is very nice. Powered by 3 AAA, and uses a different LED bulb from the rest.

Has a magnetic base as well as a magnetic swivel clip.

Guess I am the only one out there that likes these.  :D

I must admit I use conventional headlamps (mostly wide angle 1xAA Zebralights) for this sort of illumination.  But I do like to see alternatives  :tu:

This Prime Lite work light looks brilliant. Does it take drops and knocks?

The go-to work light for me is Streamlight Clipmate USB, which isn't exactly pocket friendly, not magnetic but has white and red LED on articulating hose, USB chargeable. The LED plastic housing cracked within a month of use.

For the money a good name brand single AAA light is going to be a lot smaller, more useful, have a better LED and probably have (much) longer runtime and a better beam pattern. I'm thinking I'd rather have one i3S than a pocket full of any other AAA light except maybe for a Peak but even that is a big trade off since you can buy 5 i3Ss for the price of one Peak.

Yes, they can take a knock. Mind you, I am not the roughest on my stuff...but the one work-light fell several times while doing jury duty hanging off a metal cabinet (My fault, I kept hitting it...it was tight quarters).

As far as beam pattern, this is why I love these type of lights. You get a nice consistent oval room illuminating beam that is larger and more useful than a more traditional flashlight.

At least in theory, I like the worklights of the major powertools manufacturers (Bosch, Dewalt etc.) as they take the same rechargeable battery as their powertools.

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Well found myself another one..and this one is a bit interesting.

Interesting in that this one is designed to fit into a breast pocket. The slider switch has 3 positions: 4 LED light , 1 LED light, and the middle position is off. The LEDs are all located on a piece that swivels. Another point of interest. The bottom of the light has a telescoping pick up magnet which also serves double duty providing the light with a magnetic base.

Here it is nestled in my shirt pocket.

The LED bar swivels outwards. You can see the large spring steel clip.

4 lights on provides a nice floor to ceiling beam of white light.

You can also have a single LED which is located on the end.

This variant is wider than the others mentioned in this thread.

The magnet has around a foot and a half of reach. The tip is also bendable allowing you some flexibility.

Chako, that's a cool find. Swivel light, magnetic, telescopic and flexible pick up tool. Cant ask for more?

Good to know these pocket lights can take some damage. I didn't notice the Streamlight get knocked or dropped, wonder how the casing cracked.

We have a few of these at the Powernoodle Compound:  http://www.amazon.com/Nebo-Larry-Lucy-Flashlight-light/dp/B007M0KCW2.  They are good for shirt pocket carry, and they have a magnet on the back.

But as a general rule, I prefer either a small 1xAAA or 2xAAA EDC light, like a Fenix E05.

When hands-free is helpful, I really like the Black Diamond Spot headlamp:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FYK1OB0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00.  They are awesome.  I keep one of these in my vehicle, another in my house and one in my Man Sack (Maxpedition Mongo).
