SanReMu 710: A review and on the job test
on: July 06, 2015, 09:25:29 PM
I need to start this with a confession. I'd wanted the 710 on hand when I did the review on the Persistance,to have a cheap alternative to compare it to,but I couldn't find the 710

I found it yesterday, exactly where I'd been looking for it :bnghd:

Anyway, after having put a couple of Spydercos through their paces,I thought it might be of interest to see how a cheapy compared.

Let's start with a few pics to give a idea of the size of the 710

The 710 is smaller than I remembered it being. Cutting edge is a tiny bit longer than the Spydie, but over all the blade is shorter,as the tang doesn't extend past the scales. That being said the body of the 710 is shorter and narrower than the Perci.

As is traditional with these threads, let's take a walk around the knife...

The blade is 8Cr15MoV steel, for what ever that's worth ;)

It has a nice edge to it,but whether that's factory standard,or down to Zed,this knifes original owner,I don't know. I rather like the little logo, adds a sense of class.

Ergonomics are not as good as I remember...it's either that or I've been spoilt by Spydercos ;)
The finger choil is nice and deep, but the liner lock and the pocket clip seem to rub on the middle joint of the index finger. We'll have to wait and see how it goes in practice.

There's some nice jimping on the spine of the blade. Your thumb falls nicely into place on it

There's a small spring loaded bearing on the frame, and matching indent for keeping the blade locked closed.

The lock bar is wide and very solid, matching the width of the tang perfectly.

Punches well over its weight Mike! Blade is completely secure open or closed;all the screws are nicely recessed. For the money,I really can't find a fault! We'll have to see how it stands up to use

In summary, the 710 is a low cost, but well built folder. Neat and tidy, easy to open, but not too tacticool.

Pros:
Low cost
Great fit and finish

Cons
Single fit for the pocket clip
Lock bar and clip rub index finger

I have bought several of the 710s, and gifted most of them. I still have a few. I remember a couple of years ago when production stopped and they were going for silly prices, until some more were produced..

The reason I do not use it is because it is heavy for a single blade knife. I am also not too keen on all metal knives, for some reason.
I find the (composite body) SRM 763 better, as it is lighter, has a better locking mechanism (supposedly stronger but also easier to close without having your fingers in the middle), and has a bottle opener too.

Still, the SRM 710 is considered a classic, so many people do like it.

It was the first SRM knife that I remember anyone ever talking about.  A little controversial as being a "knock off Sebenza" at the time, but I think it's managed to carve out it's own little niche in the market.  I certainly like mine well enough, but I have to say that I've never carried it much for basically the same reasons as you.

First day report for the 710!

Combinations of ups and downs really. On the up side, the pocket clip is rather good, nice and grippy on the pocket without being difficult to put in or pull out. The 710 sits very comfortably in the pocket.

The down was when one of the thumb studs unscrewed  Thankfully the stud landed in my pocket, but there's an appointment with some threadlock later >:D

You might want to put a dab on the pivot screw too, mine came undone after a hard day's flicky-OHO practice. ::)

The Sanrenmu 710, which is currently US$12.95 shipped on Amazon Prime, may have the most utility per dollar of any knife.  Though there are many other contenders in the budget category, the 710 is hard to beat when cost is factored in.

I've said it before but SRM better know how to make a good knife at this point - they've spent the past 10+ years as the Chinese OEM for a ton of western knife companies such as CRKT, Kershaw etc.  I mean, Sal Glesser himself said that SRM made stuff for Spyderco.

The 710 is one of those wonderful, wonderful tools - a simple design done right.

$7.99 with free worldwide shipping at exduct - lower than they have been for some time (since they added the free shipping), possibly because of the strength  of the dollar.

As far as I can tell, absolutely none. :D

The Sanrenmu 710, which is currently US$12.95 shipped on Amazon Prime, may have the most utility per dollar of any knife.  Though there are many other contenders in the budget category, the 710 is hard to beat when cost is factored in.

It used to sell for $7 for years. Then there was a period where you couldn't get one anywhere and people started demanding crazy prices for their old stock like dks mentioned. Then they came back and I bought half a dozen I think, came up to $5 a knife with shipping. :D And shortly after that the prices went back up to where they are now. So for me the $13 for a 710 seems too high, but that's only cause I've been spoiled with getting that much knife for $5. Used to give them away like candy. :P

I think the discontinued part was left from the last time it was going to be discontinued.....   :D

the price, especially for US people not affected by the rise of the dollar, is pretty good.
