Downrange Tomahawk
on: July 06, 2015, 09:43:15 PM
I'm sorta obsessed with the Downrange Tomahawk, not for practical reasons but for... uhmmm... I...

Needless to say, I'm not really there yet to buy something that I certainly would never need.
So, does anyone own one? Care to share his/her impressions and some pictures?

Looks handy if you were in a fire/rescue situation but I would never use something like it.

But......might be a neat thing for the toolbox here in tornado country but not for 180.00.

Just googled the price, Ouch!!!! I'm sure a good enough tool, but it's a lot of dosh for a very compromised tool. I think you'd be better of with a few dedicated tools as it must be a lousy chopper with all that weight spread  throughout the whole tool rather than just in the head. ???

I think that its the point, its a compromise as it is a multitool: Axe, prybar, and what not. From a martial arts point of view this could make a pretty decent melee weapon (here the weight distribution is of great advantage).
But to be honest I kind a fancy it because it really is TACTICOOOOL. Usually, that's not so much my thing but in this case it really makes me want one. And I don't even understand why.

The price is very high, but that is not really what keeps me away (I mean, skip 4-6 dinners in a restaurant and I have saved up enough).
But ultimatively, I have to admit I don't need an axe, I certainly don't need a breaching tool, I just like its design...

... and its TACTICOOL

How does it feel?  I stand by my original statement that I really don't care for the looks, but if it does the job then I won't hold the looks against it. :)

Well, its early to make an assessment (it's not even sharp yet).

The shape of the head is probably not ideal to chop wood, but I'm pretty certain you can make it work. I think the weight is comparable to a hatchet of similar size, but the weight distribution is different (more evenly along the handle).

Me, being not the strongest guy probably profit from the lighter axe head as I can be more precise, both when chopping and when hammering. Additionally, I feel that this could make a decent melee weapon (if you have need for that).

It offers more functionality than your regular axe at the price of compromising some. So, it's a multitool. You could carry a crowbar and a hatchet (better function / price) or this (better weight / bulk / better balance for fighting).

So, who is this for.
Honestly, I don't know. Soldier maybe? But Soldiers don't operate alone, so they are probably better off if one carries a pry-bar and the other a hatchet...
So that leaves mall-ninjas, zombie preppers and everybody else who likes the design and does not mind spending way too much money on it :D

Could look well in my car-boot... but I'm with Etheralicer here.

I'd just like to have more weight to the head though since it makes a huge difference for me if you just hack along or have the additional thrust of a real axehead. And for the "crowbar":

Two weeks ago one of my neighbours, an elderly woman, burnt out her flat and it was only by luck that we could drag her out of her completely smoke-filled rooms. Her door was old and offered no resistance, but since then I have added a real 50 cm crowbar to my fire extinguisher and another one to my carboot. That situation didn't feel like I needed a combination tool with extra functions, it felt like a real crowbar.

My small axe is a goodie and the crowbar has the nickname "confidence in steel", so I'll just stick to this twin-set.

Wow, $180 on Amazon. I wasn't expecting that  :ahhh

While we're on the subject of tacticool Gerber gear, has anyone given thought to their new pry bar?

It goes to the Gerber store page for that pry bar when I click it. Is it not working for you?

Put an edge on it by securing the hawk in a vice than took a metal file and started off... finished with the stone from the scythe (you gotta use what you have). The edge is decent but not great, will work on it some more :salute:

Then I took my precious hawk on my nightwalk. I call it "BRAINBITER" after Sláines axe and because its primary function is to smash zombie-skulls.
Branches up to 3cm it ate for breakfast (yeah, I know it's evening but BRAINBITER just woke). Sorry, no picture, I used the flash and the result is unuseable. From the first chomp I realized that this is not an axe you want to use without gloves (at least not if you have a bureaucrats soft hands*).
I then started to use my S10R for illumination.

Here we see BRAINBITER in his natural habitat

Admittedly, that log was not in its best shape so BRAINBITER made short work of it. I used the prying end to finish the splitting.

Some random root got chewed up and spitted out. Don't worry, the tree to the root is gone but the wood was in good shape.

Great pictures, merci!
Just being curious- How did the axe behave on impact- I mean, did the handle give you more of a shock than a usual axe would have done?
Did the prybar-part of the handle get into your way (quite long extension, sharp points...)?

Not an axe man here...

So, I couldn't say if it gives more shock. What I can say is that the coarse and grippy shaft is hard on my soft hands :P
The pry bar part was not in the way, you actually won't notice it while using the hawk.

Cleaned BRAINBITER when I noticed a notch in the edge... What on earth did I hit? A frozen worm? Also, the black coating does not appear to be very durable.

Ahh, I understand now... well, it's a slab of metal that is also a pry-bar so it is ZERO shock absorbent.
