More on Higonokami
on: July 21, 2015, 11:57:22 PM
You might remember me buying a stainless steel handled Higonokami recently

I'm really rather taken with the type. Crude or superbly simple, your choice to decide. My big concern was the edge on the handle. I figured it could bite into the hand the same way a PST can on tight grip.

I subsequently bought a brass handled version. The brass is a thicker gauge than the steel, and probably less likely to bite.

Anyway,I made up a set of scales for the Stainless model

Looks a bit crude here

Some sanding and a few coats of teak oil later and...

I carried it today. Really impressed how good an edge the blade took. The new scales make it nice and comfy in the hand. Can't begin to express just how pleased I am with this :tu:

Nice one mate  :tu: I handled that knife pre-modification at the meet, and the ergos weren't as nice as the brass one due to the scalloped cut outs. I can see those scales making a big difference to how the knife feels, and it looks like you made a nice job of it too  Are they just epoxied on, or did you manage to pin/screw them on somehow?

Cheers Al. The scales are epoxied on. I'm hoping they'll take the abuse

Great job Kirk - that should be good and comfortable for some long term use now. Have you recieved the brass scaled one yet and if so how does it compare comfort wise?

Mags, the brass on was at the Meet. I've not given it a work carry yet,I've been too enraptured by my modded one :D

I'll report back when I do :tu:

Ok,so here's a little update...

The wood scaled Higo is just brilliant, really love it! Sharp as a razor, comfy in the hand. The only thing is,you do need to be a bit more thoughtful in your choice of grip and direction of cut.

The brass one has seen work carry, taking care of a one pallet delivery. The brass is much more comfy in the hand than the stainless was. For light use,it's fine.

I've also had my Svord Mini Peasant at work,to compare a different style of friction folder. I didn't like the Svord half as much as the Higos. I much prefer the thumb pad of the Higo over the long spine. I found the that the you'd get more vertical movement in the blade when cutting through tougher boxes before the spine came up into contact with the thumb.

I still need to give Zoidberg's modded one a try :dd:

The other 'cheap folk' knife I tried was my Douk-Douk. Really, really liked it! Go figure!
