Having completed The Great MP600 Burial Project of 2014-15, and I believe with some success, it is only fitting that we begin our quest anew.  Today, with great solemnity, I interred in the red Kentucky clay a used but excellent condition Leatherman Wave manufactured in November, 2005.  God willing, and if I am still among the living and can find it, we will resurrect said Wave approximately one year from today and ascertain its condition.  Though this project is truly pointless, and is in reality little more than an excuse for me to play with an MT, we will pretend to test the corrosion resistance of the Wave which will be entombed for one year and 24" beneath heavy rains, driving snows, angry squirrels and blistering heat.

When we committed a Gerber MP600 to the earth for one year in July, 2014, I anticipated that it would be consumed with rust and rendered inoperative.  I was very wrong, and happily so.  The MP600 emerged with slight but manageable rust, which was easily cleaned and removed.  It was fully functional right out of the ground.  What to expect from the Wave?  I am hoping for a similar outcome, but only time will tell.

This is not a controlled experiment, nor is it a fair one.  I merely dug a 24" hole in the ground, dropped in the sheathed Wave and filled in the dirt.  I marked the burial spot with a memorial brick.  This time, however, I tied several long strands of twine to the sheath in order to aid its recovery next year.  Those who observed the MP600 Burial Project may recall that it took me 3 days to find that MT, and that I did so only after much prayer and supplication.  Hopefully, the string I tied to the Wave will facilitate its recovery next year by providing visual and tactile clues to its location, and may prevent me from inadvertently shoveling it onto a dirt pile like I did with the MP600.

And so we begin.

Another great burial project!
May the wave rest in peace until it is time for it to return to the living once more.

How about we bury a SOG and a Vic in adjacent plots. Then we only have to wait 1 year for 3 tools to be tested in roughly equal conditions. >:D

Shucks... I wanted a Wave.. still great job powernoodle. Amazing of you to sacrifice a toy on the altar of knowledge.

It doesn't rust to pieces it will show all those naysayers the might of LM stainless...

I think it's unfair for Mr Noodle to keep sacrificing his tools to the mercy of the ground and weather. If people want to see other tools interred, maybe they should be offering to send tools his way

For my part, delayed gratification is what makes it fun.

"A growing body of literature has linked the ability to delay gratification to a host of other positive outcomes, including academic success, physical health, psychological health, and social competence." -  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_gratification

I would say that pretty much defines us.  Except for the academic success, psychological health and social competence.

Add a string to the tool and pin it to the shed, so you find it easily next year :salute:

I'm just wondering did you sing Danny boy while lowering it into the ground? I have some uneasy feeling it that while it will be functional, it will come out in worse shape than the MP-600

There is a serious possibility you'll find a loose string next year  >:D

I'm predicting it does not fair as well as the MP600. I assume it will be hard to open the pliers and all tools, but will clean up well.

It is also worth noting that the degree to which I compact the dirt (re: water infiltration) may play as much role in this as anything in determining the outcome.  But I tried to conduct this burial in the same manner previously done in order to get consistent results.

It is also possible that after the dirt compacts, the tomb may be relatively dry except for whatever moisture naturally occurs in the soil.  I think this must be the case.

Another factor is limited oxygen, which rust is a reaction to

Quite possibly. If its that far down I do not know if rain water will reach it depending on how compact the dirt above it is. I really have no idea though.

+1
If the dirt is dense with little oksygen getting to it, the rust wont have much "fuel" to do its thing.
