Had a RadioShack E4 have in/out of the ground... because it dropped but could not find it. 

After a long period, including snow, I found it partially exposed during a snow melt.  Rinsed it in the sink and you would never know it was outside.

I left a leather baseball glove outside over winter one year as a kid. A bit of leather oil fixed it up. The cold weather protected it in the snow.

Actually I carry it in my right front pocket inside the little coin pocket in my office pants.  In jeans it goes in the little 5th pocket.
