Pocket knives with drivers
on: July 31, 2015, 09:44:19 PM
I like start a discussion on pocket knives with screw drivers, as I believe knife & drivers are the most frequently used tools in modern life under normal condition by average person.
First let's see what are available in market:

1. Leatherman CRATER C33T

2. Kershaw Select Fire

3. Emerson EDC-2

4. Coast LED120 (no pocket clip)

5. Gerber Obsidian

6. Buck X-Tract Essential

What else?

I guess we're not considering SAKs for this?

Let's not. SAK are a whole catalog by themselves.
This thread we discuss pocket knives with clip, OHO locking blades, with bonus screw drivers.

Buck X-Tract Essential (no pliers version)
Camillus Electricians knife (can never remember the "code" for it)

There are more but the names escape me at the minute, as I'm not a frequent screwdriver user. I tend to use pliers and scissors more than drivers, so these tools would just duplicate what I'm already carrying. I have seen more knives with drivers on Heinnies though

Oh, looks like Kam's post edit just ruled out the Camillus - no locking blade (just locking driver) and no clip

The gerber obsidian is another. I've never owned one, but it has drivers, and the spyderco clipitool.

This is a good thread to start. The knives already listed (Xtract and crater) are the best imo.

Are we counting the Gerber Curve? It's not OHO, but it locks and it has a carabiner-like thing.

I just bought the select fire out of curiosity and so far it seems like a solid knife for $15.

I would have wanted to get LM Crater C33B, the one with the bit driver, but unfortunately it's discontinued

Should we include the vic Centurion or Adventurer?

They are non OHO and have no Clip but are no classic SAK and are in the same league tool and size wise, I think.

I have not owned all of the above, but can add the following:

LM Crater:
Nice knives, but the versions with the integrated bit driver are to bulky for my taste. The Crater C33T is a nice knife, but the flipper makes it not only a OHO and locking and thus illegal in any but job related circumstances knife, but can be interpreted as an assisted opening knife, which is illegal anyways.

Kershaw select Fire:
Nice knife for the money (if you don´t pay geman retail, but that holds true for any of the knives mentioned except for the Opinel). It is a bit big and may be frowned upon by people around, even in a work related context.

Gerber Obsidian:
I liked the looks but the 2D Phillips was not to my liking. Rather heavy for the size and tool selection.

Opinel DIY:
I did not actually use it, but only played with it. I think anything but ocassional use of the bit driver will produce blisters in your palm. Otherwise, a nice addition to the toolbox

Victorinox Centurion:
The backside Phillips does is not ideal for many scres and the one on teh can opener will not open recessed screws. Otherwise, I quirte like the knife - Slim, nice bladeshape, massive flat driver/prying tool. Completely legal in Germany.

I have no first hand experience with the other ones mentioned.

I had C33T, didn't like it too much, complex and unreliable blade deployment. Select fire is way better that C33T in every way.

With all sorts of odd angles and sharp corners, most of these don't look like they'd be comfortable to use.

5oz is pretty reasonable for the size of knife and drivers you get with it.

Give it a chance. Like all Leathermen I've had, it took a bit of break-in to be all it should be.

1) The insides of the scales are a bit sharp. Since one has to run one's finger down them kind of hard at first to get the blade to deploy, I cut my finger. I wrote to Leatherman, they asked for me to send it in. I decided not to, and instead I just ran a flat head screwdriver over those edges to break them.

2) The pivot is a bit tight at first. Loosen up the Torx pivot screw and apply a drop of oil to the pivot.

After doing those two things, it is a GREAT little knife/MT. (though I still find I miss the other tools on a SAK, and THAT's why I never carry it.)

I did give it a chance, used it for a while. If I carry a folder, I like it to be a bit longer blade.

The Crater C33T is probably my favorite Leatherman item. It is comfortable in the hand to use as a screwdriver and I've never had any issues or complaints about the blade.

Kersha Shuffle was mentioned above, but no pic, so here you go...

My new sweat pants / gym shorts combo. Perfect for couch lounging. Driver fits outlet covers. Definitely not the greatest, but a nice feature on a cheap little folder.
