Do you have any good uses for a parcel hook
on: August 01, 2015, 06:23:43 AM
I was thinking I should find more uses for this tool, I never use it so I figured its a good idea to ask you folks.
What are some other uses you have come up with?
Or have you modified it for a different function, I figure it could be modded into a tool to untie knots, what do you think?

Hi Detroit,

Welcome aboard!

Some other uses for the hook.

- Pulling tent stakes
- Carrying a pail with a thin wire bail
- Carrying a package tied in string
- Fishing a wire out of a hole

Those come immediately to mind. Expect others will be mentioned shortly.

Quite useful for pulling leather laces through punched holes in leather working.

Welcome to the forum, Detroithiker.

We actually have a merit badge for showing uses for the hook, so you can imagine it has been discussed lots of times before.

Try the search field at the upper right. When I searched this forum for 'hook' I got 27 pages full of hits.

Off the top of my head:

  • For pulling wire out of a spot fingers can't reach
  • For pulling tight body clips out of R/C trucks
The trick is just remembering you have it and being creative.

Here are a couple more:

Entertaining 3 year-olds while waiting for a dinner order out:

I used it this day to pull some signal wiring out from the left of that receiver in an RC truck:

Here it is after just pulling out a body clip, like I said above. It would be great for any kind of cotter pin too.

For my part, the hook and the corkscrew are a waste of space.  But not everyone agrees.

Best use mentioned in this forum I remember: Tightening corset laces. A forum member attends renaissance fairs. :)

The hook???

No use for this wothless tool here!  I actually do some of my modding to change out the spring and hook on newer models.  You won't find a hook on most of my Climbers and only one Compact still has a hook.

Zip lining?

Most things people use the hook for you, could use another tool for.  Not all, but most.  You could use the can opener to retrieve things for example.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

I think, he just changes the backspring for the older version without backtool.

My personal favorite use for the hook is combined with the scissors for any prolonged period of time cutting with them or trimming beard and sideburns.

It takes that last part to a whole new level.

If you have plus scales then the pen fits into the slot where the hook sits and now you have a thicker pen to write with.

Correct you are MrBlonde...I've collected older 91's that have scissors with no hooks so I have the earlier scissor backsprings.  When I decide I really like and want to use a model regularly that has the hook, I just take 'em apart and replace the backspring, eliminating the hook.

Carrying a heavy bag of ice with the thin cord handles.

If you ever drop your keys somewhere you can't really access, you can use your shoes laces and SAK with hook to try and hook your keyring. Might be tough to pull off.

I don't really use it. Once in a blue moon, but not regularly. This might also be by virtue of. The fact that I seldom you carry a full sized SAK with scissors.

There is a YouTube vid of a guy who filed his into a lock pick. The corkscrew is just for holding the mini screwdriver

Boy, people really looking for creative ways to provide a worthless tool a value statement!  Actually though there are some very creative ideas!   :salute:

But somehow Victorinox should know that it's still pretty worthless!

If they ever opened a custom shop, it would be interesting to see how many custom orders requested a hook!

But, why? I mean the hook doesn't really get in the way of anything. By removing it, you just have less functionality and what is gained? What if you have to carry a bucket of paint with a thin wire handle or something. You'll wish you had your hook then!

I'm thinking about modding mine into a punch down tool for data points. Making it a simular shape to the clipsal 110PDT tool. As a sparkie think it might be bit more useful

Are you really worried about less functionality?  How many times a year do you carry a paint can that doesn't have a plastic handle?  How many times a year do you carry a bag of ice so far that you need the relief of using a hook?

I've never found a use, let alone multipe uses, for a 91mm hook, and I do mean never.

Well, just remember it's there, keep an open mind, and you will be surprised some time when it saves the day.

There are certain times, (admittedly rare) where it is the ONLY tool that will work.

The one that comes to mind for me was when I was doing some wiring and the wire had slipped back between the electrical box and the drywall. The can opener was too short. Anything long and thin enough to reach it was not hooked. Except the hook.

This is the trick to really getting one's money's worth from a SAK: remembering that for most of the implements, there is one suggested use, but many other uses, which depend only on our imaginations.

I remember the first time someone pointed out that an orange peeler on a Minichamp or Executive also makes an excellent clamshell package opener, I felt like this:
