[CLOSED] Junior Woodchucks Guidebook (with GAW)
on: August 02, 2015, 10:02:10 PM
Didn't all of you wish that you had a Guidebook like Huey, Dewey, and Louie from Donald Duck? Or did you even have on?

Blue YMCA-guidebook from 1988 and red one from 1956

Mine was from the YMCA Switzerland. It had everything in it from knot tying, navigation, signaling, first-aid, wild-life, songs etc. I recently re-discovered my mothers guidebook, printed in 1956. Its very similar... but when I read the part about the emergency kit, I couldn't help but laugh... Only five items went in back then, can you guess them?

Page from the 1956 guidebook. Rough translation below:

Quote from: Guidebook 1956
Emergency Kit
If you plan on a longer hike, maybe to get away from people, so you have to remember, that maybe not everything goes according to plan. And maybe there is an unplanned delay: Bad weather, accident etc. For these cases you have your emergency kit. [censored] These items you put into a cloth bag and sew it shut. [censored]

GAW
Guess three of the five items and you are an instant winner. If by the end of the GAW (maybe in a week or so), noone got three then the price goes to the one who guessed two (random draw if more than one person guessed two). If no-one guessed two, people who had one correct guess get a chance (random draw). For one item, there are two alternatives, only one of them counts. The first item is so obscure, if you guess it right it counts as two.

Rules
Minimum posts: The book has 189 pages, so you should have at least as many posts
Frequency: You can have a guess every day (unless I change that).
Hints: You won't get any hints, unless I decide otherwise
Prize: 2015 Steelblue Alox Pioneer or a Wenger Laser (winners choice)

THE LIST
Copy-Paste the list and add your name and your guesses. Keep it tidy (exactly one space before and after the "-")!
yourname - guess, guess, guess, guess, guess (That is a list of FIVE guesses!)
e.g.:
Etherealicer - silver stake, shotgun, garlic, cross, holy water

Finally here is a quote from the 1988 guidebooks emergency kit (remember the rule about hints!)
Quote from: Guidebook 1988
handkerchief (cloth), washed and folded = sterile

Am I right to assume you don't want to pack a "bee" sting, but rather a stRing?

or did you mean this sting:

I told you I laughed when I read the list, right? I think I need to give a little hint. This book is for kids age 7+ and although this particular part is directed at older boys and girls, these were kids that did not have spares and their favorite toy was a stick (although they probably called it a gun, a sword or a horse).

What does it mean? So far 0 (that is ZERO) items where guessed...

Also, since I gave a hint the clock is reseted and everybody can have another guess

Small update, I just ordered the 2014 version of the guidebook... Oh wait, that is completely irrelevant for this GAW :D

I also ordered another SAK to give the winners a 3rd choice, namely this:

Official knife of the Swiss YMCA (German CVJM/F which in Swiss German is called "Cevi")
"Das haut" loosely translates to: It's awesome / it cuts very well / it punches

Hey, the 1956 version is awesome.

I love the 1988 version. And I was religious about my emergency kit when I was in the YMCA. Probably have to visit my parents house and see if I can find it, or whats left of it...
I'm curious about the 2014 version too (don't like the cover design, but what do they say "Don't judge a book by its cover").

In 1988 the Emergency Kit, was no longer sewn shut but came in a metal container about 15 x 9,5 x 4cm in size. It was intended to carry all the little things you might need during the day, so it was more of a Everyday-Kit.

Emergency-Kit 1988 (translation of contents below)

- First-aid-kit: Desinfectant, bandage, bandaid, tweezers
- Handkerchief (cloth), washed and folded = sterile
- Thin wire
- String (3 to 5m)
- Measuring string, 2m with a knot every 10 cm
- Shoe laces
- Scissors or knifes
- Candle in pill tube for protection
- Cementit (glue)
In Matchboxes:
- Matches
- Poisonous firestarters (Hexamine fuel tablet) :D
- Chalk
- Replacement bulb for flashlight
- Rubber band
- Paper clip
- Money, total of 2CHF (for phone booth)
- Stamps
- Nails & tacks
- Tape
Sewing Kit:
- tough thread
- needles (sewing, fixing pin and safety pins)
- Some cloth
- buttons for pants and shirt

So here is today's hint:
Only one item from the new Kit was already in the kit from 1956!

50ft-trad - pocket knife, compass, refuse bag, candle, matches
styx - pocket knife, matches, sting, compass, canteen

Grathr - Pencil, paper, lunch, blanket, milk bottle.
We have a whooping three people who guessed one item right
Corwyn - Whistle, shoe laces, buttons, bread, vaseline
styx - cloth, needle, whistle, band aids and a candle
Huntsman -  Whistle, dry biscuit (cookie), First aid kit, spare socks, pencil

I am sure if you scrutinised the three lists

  • One guess correct
  • And 1988 kit
You could get it all right - But it's all too difficult !!

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.
