Is it just me that didn't understand what whole the fuss is with the Signal?
It looks to me like a cross between a a Charge and a Skeletool with a hammer added in. Also it has a whistle and firesteel, but really you can get a kit of these for 1 USD so who cares?

I do find it overpriced and a tad iffy, but if it's half Charge, half SkeleTool, it can't be all that bad, can it?

PS: Also it's pretty  :D

I agree about the entertainer part, he earns his money by eating rhino crap in front of the television and he probably earns a lot doing it.

I don't own gerber stuff but i get that the average discovery watching man might be more attracted to a blade that has bear grylls stamped on the knife.

I hope you saw the episode where I fashioned a survival raft out of 3000 Powernoodle Ricecakes, and then ate my way to freedom as I floated down the Amazon.

Do you eat them from the bottom of the raft up or from the top - down?

I have a lot of respect for Bear.  He has been a soldier in the SAS, he has climbed Everest after he broke his back in a parachuting accident. He has crossed the atlantic in a i RIB. He found a way to make good living making extreme television shows, marketing Gerber,  writing books and holding motivational speeches. He has also done several expeditions and beaten several records to raise awareness for various charities.

Yes, the man vs nature shows where silly, and were not very realistic. But it was entertaining to watch.
And to be honest, I doubt many here could accomplish what he has, even if they had the oportunity do the things he has.

There, rant over. Let the bashing continue. :D

+1 I have a lot of respect for him  too, yeah his shows are a bit ott and silly but I do find them entertaining but that's  a clever man for you in my eyes , he made survival entertaining and at the time there was only Ray Mears on TV here in the uk , which many would find boring .
He found a gap in the market and made survival fun and exiting for many and made a mint doing it good for him. Plus my 5 year old son loves his shows and anything that keeps him interested in being prepared and the outdoors is fine by me.

Has he designed anything?
A knife, a multi-tool, a hatchet, anything.
Just curious.

Did he have anything to do with the design of any of all those items that bear his initials?

I might not be his biggest fan, but I do think he has to have at least some involvement in the Gerber gear.  For the stuff that's simply re-branded (like the multitools) I think he must see them before his name goes on.  With the BG only stuff I think it might be more varied.  Did he design the Greenhorn knife?  For some reason I suspect not.  Was he more involved in the parang?  I think he likely was.  All guesswork on my part though.

At least in the early days (according to discussions I had with Gerber designers) he did have some input although it was somewhat limited to color and a specific request to make things "grippy."  Beyond that I have no idea, but I would agree with the above.

I also have to say that I think I would have a lot more faith in the BG line than the Les Stroud line.  The crap from Camillus is very disappointing and I have to say, I have lost some respect for Les as a result of that crappy line.

I've seen one hanging on a shop wall.  It's.....a Gamo with BG on it.  I can't see any reason on the planet that would have me part with money for one.

Yes I have to agree with the Les Stroud and Camillus stuff. I have a few items, and I am less than pleased with them. I hate to say it but some of the BG stuff isn't all that bad.

As part of the marketing they claim he has some inputs into the products.

I do wonder about that reasoning.  Has anyone ever failed to cut a rope just because all the have is a sharp plain edged knife?

I haven't  :D Some of the Bear stuff isn't to bad :tu: The Les Stroud Camilus stuff doesn't look as good I am afraid :-[ At least Les did go with Helle and Wetterlings for some better gear though :D Otherwise Bear would have him beat hands down with the Gerber stuff :o
