Yesterday, I did another day trip, but this time to Manitoulin Island. Manitoulin Island has the distinction of being the largest fresh water island in the world albeit, not without controversy however...

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/manitoulin-still-hyped-as-world-s-largest-freshwater-island-1.1874363

Either way, it is still a big island. So large that I only got to do a circle tour of the eastern part of the island before I was forced to head back home. The island is a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours drive from Sault Ste Marie.

As I am cruising the island, I arrive in a small location called Mindemoya. I note a few Bushnell outdoor signes on a large building. As I got closer, there was a sign stating you could get your fishing and hunting licences there. Well I now have to stop although I did fight with myself to do so. I was more than prepared to drive through as it was getting late in the day. Well am I happy that I did.

The bottom floor is a hardware store. I looked around and didn't see anything of interest. As I was heading out the door, I noted a flight of stairs. I ask one of the workers what was up there. I was told to go on up. Well I was floored. It was like heaven up there. A full floor of hunting, fishing, firearms, and all the related paraphernalia. This place is called the Up Top Sport Shop.

As I took my time looking around, I noticed a buck rotating display, and inside was this a BO Buck multi-tool. I thought to myself...NO WAY! I haven't seen one of those in ages. I think to myself I have to ask about it. I am floored when the guy opens the display and hands me a brand spanking new BO Buck tool. I had to buy one.

Time for some photos.

Here is a map of Manitoulin Island I received from the business featured in this posting.

And there is Mindemoya.

And now you know why this place has old NIB stock no longer made and long ago discontinued for sale. I gather not many folks in and around Mindemoya (which is in the middle of nowhere...really) are willing to pay 100 bucks for a tool. Me as a collector, was excited to come across something like this. By the way, the box is circa 1997.

Model number on the box.

Inside the overly large box is a sheath and an instruction/warranty pamphlet.

The pamphlet opened to some information.

Now the unveiling.

Tada. It kind of blows me away to find a brand spanking BO Buck Tool in the middle of nowhere from a business that doesn't look like much from the ground floor but opens up to be a utopia for the hunter/fisher folks.

The tool set.

And from what little I know, looking at the plier pivot point to the handle, this is an early production version.

This was very much like finding a new Victorinox auto tool in another small town called Wawa the previous summer.  :D

Nice! Why not make an offer on all the "old obsolete junk" they have over there?
 :pok:

You know you'll be buying all of it in the end, right?...

I tried. The reason they still have old obsolete NIB stuff is because they stick to their prices forever. Some places do not believe in clearing old stock. It does make the place absolutely fascinating to visit however. I mean, the last thing I thought I would ever come across and be able to buy is something that dates back to the late 90s. I mean, we are now in 2015! Unfortunately, the BO Buck 360 was their only multi-tool other than a much newer and cheaper Maxxam set. They did have plenty of knives...and I am sure there might be a few gems hiding among their stock.

They did have some old boxes of ammunition as well, especially some ancient boxes of military ball 9mm ammo that I stayed away from as they still wanted 16 dollars for 50 rounds. The store employee told me they had these on the shelf for 20+ years...stating that very few on the island shoot handguns.

What a find. How do you keep managing to do it (I mean, apart from the obvious perseverance, dedication, tenacity and luck)?

This is pure luck. I didn't even know that the only store of it's kind on Manitoulin Island was there.

I'm absolutely tickled when I come across a sweet deal at a store. I have a few choice items I obtained that way and remember buying them like it was yesterday.

Great find Dan, keep finding those deals :tu:

As a connoisseur of the BuckTool you did very well on your find. I really like that the box and paper work came with it. I look forward to seeing it in the drawer with your other BuckTools. Some times it pays to pull off the road and look.    :tu:

Amazing find, Chako! New in box, nearly 20 years old, and on the sales floor. That is incredible.

Buck needs to get back into the MT game. Very unique tool they produced.

This doesn't have enough visibility, IMO.  That is an excellent find, Dan; I hope you enjoyed your trip up there, too, in general.

Chako, congrats on a great catch!  I think what you said about the shop keeping up with old prices and old stock is really what keep all the goodies in place, and that can be done unless rent is cheap and location is remote.  Often time, as a fellow tool enthusiast, finding rare tool in the least possible place imaginable is really what makes the hobby interesting.

I never look in that forum. Maybe there should be a road trip report forum. I would look in that one.

Thanks. I went back today to take a closer look at what they had. Here is the BO Buck 360 in the display case...

And I took a photo of part of the sales floor.

Yep, their prices are fairly high on many things, which explains a lot.  :D
