Recommend a Tanto Blade
on: September 03, 2015, 03:51:00 AM
Hi all,

For a while I have wanted a folding knife with a straight Tanto style blade but I can't seem to narrow down exactly which one. So let's hear your recommendations, what is your favorite knife with a Tanto blade and why.

Thanks!

Benchmade makes numerous automatic, assisted opening, and liner lock blade manual opening knives with Tanto blade.  Too numerous to list here.

My first ever Internet purchase was in 1998 from AG Russel in Arkansas.  It was a Benchmade Emerson design CQ-7 3-inch folding knife.  I have never sharpened it.  Frankly, it has never needed to be sharpened.  I took it with me to what was to become OIF-1 in 2003.  Sliced paracord like a butter knife thru hot butter.

Benchmade also makes the HK line of knifes.

That would be my first look: Benchmade.

The only tanto blades I've had are Emersons. I've had Raven, CQC7, Specwar, HMMV-K 018. The 2003 collectors HMMV-K 018 with a zero ground blade would be my favorite it is a tank of a folder.    :)
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

Any particular reason for a Tanto blade?

On the high end are the Emersons but on the lower side there are CRKT's that may do the job. (depending on why you want one)

E.person Roadhouse is my favorite! I've beat the snot out of a Roadhouse the last three years and just bought a super Roadhouse I keep in reserve.

Might help to tell everyone

a) your budget
b) what blade length range
c) any blade lock system preference
d) assisted open or not

Without knowing any of that, I'll suggest looking at the Cold Steel Mini Recon series.

CRKT makes the M16 series in various sizes, in either tanto or spear point styles. I carry the m16-01 (smallest model) in tanto, and I like it quite well

Maybe an old version Cold Steel Voyager. Those made in Japan are really fine, if bought with a decent price.

Hi all,

Thanks for the great suggestions! I will spend the next little while researching them and see which ones appeal to me most.

Any particular reason for a Tanto blade?

On the high end are the Emersons but on the lower side there are CRKT's that may do the job. (depending on why you want one)

Well really just what I said in my original post I've just wanted one for a while. No particular purpose I just like the blade.

Might help to tell everyone

a) your budget
b) what blade length range
c) any blade lock system preference
d) assisted open or not

Without knowing any of that, I'll suggest looking at the Cold Steel Mini Recon series.

 :)

Haha fair enough well let's see

A) If it is worth it I will pay it. Realistically I think $300 would be getting near my max.
B) Hmm I don't need a folding machete so probably give or take 3".
C) I am not terribly picky on the locks.
D) Similarly not terribly picky here either. I am in Canada so it can't be an automatic is really my main constraint.

Thanks again all I will continue to do my research based on your suggestions! :)

$300 is a nice range for a folder :)

Zero Tolerance (same parent company as Kershaw) makes some really nice folders. I haven't tried their tantos, but I would certainly look into them with your budget. They use ball bearings for assisted opening with many/all (?) of their folders, which give them a very smooth opening action. If you can get a chance to try a Zero Tolerance folder, you might really like the feel of it.

And then of course Benchmade, which has already been suggested, is a great brand to check out.

Why  Tanto blade? Please educate me.  ???

I can think of one reason. 'Cause there can be a coolness factor to them. Shoulda seen the look on my teenage son's face when he got a Cold Steel Recon Tanto for Xmas. I coulda spend three times what that cost on a different fixed blade geometry, and I can guarantee you I wouldn't have gotten the same look of proud new ownership. Certainly a bit less practical, but such a nice blade. Sometimes, it's all about want   :D

Haha exactly! Sometimes it is just because something is cool.
