New Wave with unequal bevel
on:
September 03, 2015, 11:51:22 PM
Hi all,
Thousand reads, first post.
Sorry for any English mistakes, I´m from Brasil.
I´ve just received a new Wave and found out that the bevel of the plain blade is totally different one side from the other.
The thickness of the bevel on one side is 2 mm and on the other 1 mm.
The pictures are not very good, but live it seems worst than in the pictures.
Are the waves that way or mine is a lemon?
Although asymmetrical, it seems razor sharp and shaves my arm hair easily.
Thanks for any input.

Greetings. I've had several Waves pass thru my hands and yes some of the bevels have been off. I have not had one as off as yours throughout the length of the blade. Mine have been off towards the tips or on one section along the middle but not by a wide margin.

It's not going to be perfect, it's made by Leatherman
The good news is that it doesn't matter in the slightest. As you've said, the knife is sharp so it will do the job it was meant to. Once it shops doing it's job (the edge goes dull) and you need to sharpen it, it's going to be down to you to put on the edge that you want. This would be the case even if the factory edge was perfectly even.
Use it, enjoy it, and start practicing your sharpening skill on something cheaper, ready for the day when it's time for you to work on this one.

This is not uncommon with Leatherman multitools. You would think they would have someone who could properly sharpen, but you would be wrong. It will not affect the performance so your good to go.

Just checked all of my Waves, Charges and Surges and none - I really mean NONE has both sides ground or sharpened with the same bevel. The one on the S30 blade on my Charge TTi is the closest to 'perfect' but even so, it's a little off. I have to admit that the bevels on mine are closer to the one you show in your second photo, though.
Don't sweat it, as Cap mentioned above, that won't affect the performance of your tool at all.

Thanks for all answers.
Good to know my wave isn´t faulty.
I guess when time to sharpen arrives I´ll try to sharpen only the side with the smaller bevel and they will get near to equal, although the blade width will decrease a little.

I'm afraid most of my waves also are uneven on the sharpening. never has bothered me much as i tend to use them until destruction then send them back to Leatherman for another.
