Teach me about Air rifles please.
« on: August 15, 2008, 08:41:05 PM »
It recently occured to me that I've not shot any kind of gun in at least 7 years :o, and I'd really like to get back into it once I've got a bit of money :)

For the time being at least I'm going to have to rule out firearms, as I have no where to store them, or land to shoot one and not having a car (and not wanting one) it's a bit of a tricky thing to transport the gun ::), plus it's very  difficult to get a firearm's liecence anyway.

So that leaves airifles :), now I've shot and owned hundreds of the things in my teen's, but looking in a copy of Airgunner today I've noticed that things have moved on a bit in the last decade or so :D, so could do with some advice please :)

Basically I want a full power (12lb, per square foot) rifle or carbine, preferably a spring gun, with a decent set of iron sight's, good spares availability and reliability, and preferably a hunter, should thing's start getting too expensive in this fair isle :)

All advice and links welcome :)

Thanks in advance fella's :)

Like most firearms, they have a simple "point and click" interface... :D

Yeah I had a couple of Crossman's when I was a kid :), I'd love to get hold of a Backpacker to teach my boy how to shoot when he's older :)

But Crossman seem to have moved over completely to Co2 operation, which is hardly green is it ::)

I have a Crosman 2100 rifle and it's dead accurate!  It's not Co2 powered, so after every shot it requires up to ten pumps.  I've found I can make a bigger hole in a target (usually a can of water) if I use 5-6 pumps and use a round headed pellet.  The pellet goes slower so there's more of a "punch" when it hits instead of skating right through the can at high speeds.  With Co2 it's kind of hard to judge the shot after a while because the pressure drops after every shot.

It's possible to mount a scope on it also.  Mine came with a cheap one, but it works really well.

I'd go for a Gamo break barrel.. I've got four of them myself and they are the best, IMO. I have: a Shadow 1000, Varmint Hunter, Viper, and lastly a Silver Shadow 890.. I would recommend getting the Shadow 1000.. But, if you don't like break barrels than I'd go for the Benjamin Blue Streak... It is a .20 caliber though.. They are not readily available as .177 caliber though.. The Benjamin is really powerful too! But, I prefer the break barrel and some hate them. If you do go for a .177 caliber break barrel then make sure you get the Gamp Raptor pellets. They increase velocity by 25% too!  :o

Oh dear god ::) :D

I used to have a Gamo, I think it was a Delta :think:, but break barrel's are my prefered type anyway so I'll have a closser look at them :)

I'll also look up the Crossman 2100 while I'm at it :)

Basically you've got to be over 14 to own a rifle, 17 a pistol (but that may have changed now). you're aloud up to 12lb per square foot in a rifle, and 6 in a pistol, and you most have it covered in public.

But your no longer aloud to buy one over the internet >:(, so good luck finding a gunshop ::)
