Wenger Titanium w. "standard" blade
on: September 21, 2015, 09:41:44 AM
Ok, so here I am owning my third Wenger Titanium.
I don´t use them, flip them regret and buy another one.
This makes no sense in teh long run, I think.

Does anyone know if it would be üpossible to use (with reasonable effort) a standard SAK mainblade in the Titaniums Chassis? It would make a nice EDC pocket knife, being non-OHO, locking and having the benefit of the bit-driver.

Maybe - if it is built on the standard Wenger 85mm "chassis" one could just make a nice 2 or 3 layer Wenger with lockblade and Titanium scales?

If anybody has any input on this, please speak up.

I think you'd have to take one apart and if the pivot looks close you'd probably be able to make it work.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

My main worry was the thickness of teh Titaniums blade and teh pivot design - I am a bit hesitant to take something apart I most likely will not get back together unharmed... ;)
And thanks for your thoughts, most appreciated!

I´ll try to post some measurements and pics.

Just looking at the pics online it looks to be a 85mm. If so a 84mm blade might work.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

If someone wants to try, I have one and I don't like it. I even pay for the mod if it works out :D

It's ON :salute:

now what should go in IF it works?
I was thinking metal saw and pliers, together with its ability to hold bits it would make a nice tool.

I am stuck. I can not decide on a toolset if I was to be the first... That´s why I let you have the honour of the first Wenger Titanium mod... :D
I would want this to be a companion to my EDC MT but also a light weekend carry.
I find anything above 3 layers to big for pocket carry. Maybe I can accept 4 layers as it is smaller and slimmer than a 91 mm Vic.
Let`s see:
Blade layer is fixed and has just the blade.
Opener layer, if possible with a modified Vic can opener or one from the Delemont collection to have some way to handle a Phillips without carrying bits.
Then it gets hard.
Scissors? But they´d be redundant with the MT and most things can be cut with a knife, too
Phillips and wrench? I find the wrench a bit small to be useful on a semi-regular basis. Maybe ths carabiner would be an option?!
Woodsaw? Is not included in my MT and I could need one sometimes when my son decides which branch he wants to take with him on one of our walks.
Not easy to decide, as you see.

What layers are you thinking about?
And if you decide, I can privide some donor Wengers I hava accumulated.

Some measurements:
The front and backpin on both are about 69.5 mm apart.
A standard Wenger uses 4 pins while teh Ti one uses 3, locted differently.
Single layer Wengers do use 3 pins, too, but the third is located differently compared with the Ti.

The Ti´s blade is 2,6 mm thick, the standard Wengers only 1,8 mm.
vic 111 and 108 knives have 2.4 mm blades, the one on a 93 measured 2,75, so I guess tha 93mm blade would be a good candidate, although teh pivot area and blade shape need to be altered.

Because it has a bit holder its more of a mechanic thingy, so:

- Metal File
- Pliers
- Blade

I don't like the opener layer, its anyway on all SAKs, so I would avoid it.
That way it would combine well with a CT-29 (maybe a mod with scissors).

Depending on your Titanium model, you can just replace the woodsaw with teh file.
I think the pliers layer would call for either 2 other layers or one custom cut from flat stock.

I think I should have a used Wenger with file and Pliers, if you are interested.

Its the single layer model

Actually, looking at the pins I see some difficulties adding additional layers, but that is what this is all about. Just notice that I took the picture the wrong way round... so give me a minute...

As you can see, the Titanium has the "hidden pin" all the way through and misses the "third regular pin" all together...
Steve, you have your work cut out :D

I do have a file layer for this mod, but I need to know if the pliers used on the Wenger Ranger 120mm series are the same as the 84 mm ones? If that is the case, I will tear into an old Everest to exchange it´s pliers for Scissors (should swap with a washer/spacer, right?!)
In any case, I´m looking forward to this mod!
Any Ideas what blade will be used?

Just judging from pics on the interweb the pliers are the same as 84mm. Without having one here I can only guess that they are the same.

I only have the ones in the 120 mm Wenger, but I guess they wil be using the same ones on 120 and 85 mm models as vic does with the 111/91 mm models.

Update! The blade is out and another in its place. However the wenger ti blade has notched on both sides to prevent it from closing.
