Help on Rough Rider
on: September 27, 2015, 05:45:19 PM
I have been looking in to RR knives, and i already have small Toothpick. Bought it because i thought it would be good food knife to go. Well it was good knife to go, on length blade, but little small for my hand and other tasks. I would like it to be able to cut and peel an apple. Would like it to be able to butter my sandwich, and cut cheese.

I have been looking in to couple stockmans, with three blades, Trapper with two blades, and large Toothpick with one blade. I would like to hear your opinions on RR knives, and wich ones you think would suit for my needs...

I would really appreciate, if you could come up with pictures comparing it to knives or stuff formally known stuff to us, something like SAK 91 or 93 mm models.

Yes, thank you. Stockman main blade seems ok size. How do you like other blades in use? Are three blades on one knife too much? Is it bulky for its size?

The stockman is one of my favourite patterns ,I use the sheep's foot blade for work duties and the spey for say sharpening a penciled, main blade for bigger jobs,I keep the spey really sharp, this knife isn't too bulky, nice traditional slipjoint and well made  :tu:

I think everyone should try at least one RR,and there stockman is a good one too start with, as is there bone handled barlow, the dog bone jack was my most expensive RR and sadly not without issues, crack in bone near pin, broken bit in corner of bone and gap on one side of the backspring  :-\ HH did offer too look at it but i decided too just use it as functions ok, i filled broken bone corner with jb weld, you can hardly notice it,but most RR ive had have had good fit n finnish   :tu:

I have the same - I posted some pictures in the stockman thread.

Mine came with one end of the covers slightly loose, but it is one of the sweetest operating knives I have and the wood looks nice

And they probably make Buck's Chinese made slipjoints as well.

I did  look into this a few years ago and posted about it.

Based on what was known then RR, Colt, Buck, Indian Head and others had their Chinese made traditional knives, at least most of them, made by the same factory, under slightly different specifications (e.g. Colt had a better finish). They are not going to be exactly the same, but a lot of the parts, like the body, blades etc will be shared.

Frost- Imperial - Schrade use a different factory, but some of the Kissing Crane models may also be made at the RR factory

I am not aware of a change in that.

:salute: one obvious difference is the highly polished blades on the RR,this i like  :tu: the fit n finnish is very good on most RR,ive only had one not so good one,the fit n finnish on my buck 371 is also spot on, :tu:

With RR you do not need to over think it.

What about the electricians pattern? I think Rough Rider makes one.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Well, you are right. I should have ordered it already. Now i am thinking of ordering to of them

Yes, RR does make one. But i really do not need that kind of knife yet. I have concidered it, because it might fit my work needs. But now i am looking nice food/clean knife. Maybe someday i will get that pattern knife.

I like the stockman more but really it depends on what you want. For the same size with a trapper you get two large blades, whereas on the stockman you get one large and two smaller. It depends on what you want to use them for

(get both!!)

On my signature line there are some picture threads that have various stockmans and various trappers if you want to see what options you can heave

I actually have both in shopping cart. Now just pondering if get one, or both... And yes, i am aware of your threads. And yes, i will blame you for wanting more than actually is needed...

Bit late here,so this may count towards your next RR order. The Stockman is better in the hand than the Trapper. But the Sowbelly pattern is better again. Their Barlow is a real jem;the DogBone Jack is very, very nice;and there's a pattern whose name I forget, maybe the hawksbill Jack(?) is a great work knife!
