Cold Steel Trail Hawk. Any good?
on: September 30, 2015, 05:26:33 PM
I have been looking at maybe getting a Cold Steel Trail Hawk.

I have no real practical need for such a thing. I do not intend to throw it. It just seems like a good piece of gear for my car kit, since I don't yet have a good tool for moderate wood cutting tasks.

Any feedback on these form folks here?

I certainly like mine, though the small cutting edge is a slightly limiting factor.  I've been thinking about getting either the Frontier or Pipe hawk.

I do have a CS trail hawk.  I am no axe/hawk expert, and hardly use them enough to call myself experience.  But testing this in comparison to other real axe, even a layman like myself notice there is a significant difference in performance.  The edge of the trail hawk is rather small (~2 in) vs something like a Fiskar/Gerber 17" axe (~3 in edge), and sturdy construction of the later just give me much more confidence to use it.

The good part of the CS trail hawk is its really light weight, and I can throw it if I really want to try.  Otherwise, I only use it for splitting wrist size wood like Mears in this video(2:20):

I agree with the others. The edge is a bit short. I prefer my axe king hawk over the trail hawk

For the application you mention those little Fiskars/Gerber (sure I've seen a similar Buck as well?) would be better.

Get the Trail Hawk anyway, strip it sand it pimp it, its great fun  :D

Before Lynn gets the idea that the Trail isn't any good I'm going to stick up for it a little and say that I think it's still a very capable tool.  With a very light hawk it's all about accuracy and, if you get it right, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how much it can do in terms of splitting and chopping.

For sure, it has a mean edge and just eats wood.....little bits at a time
