Lets see them patinas!
on: October 03, 2015, 12:19:56 AM
So there was talk of how a lot of us here love a good wear patina on a wood knife. So I thought why not have a thread where we could see all them beautiful well worn tools.

All your old tools are welcome be it SAK, Leatherman, Monrouge beck even SOG or Gerber.  :pok:

I should have some patina knives handy. I will check and get pics tomorrow. I know I have my forced patina Opinel handy. It was a experiment and I never re attempted. I know I could do a really cool tiger stripe patina on it if I wanted. I like natural patinas though.

One thing I really love is the patina on the Super Blue Spydercos.

NOT MY PICTURE.

My MechaRogue is beginning to show some wear, but nothing like SG's SAKs ;)  These are the best pics I can seem to get to show it, so hopefully it's noticeable.

How's that?  Does patina apply to blades themselves?  I thought this was about the scale wear, as some of us were discussing in the other thread, which lead to this thread

Yes patina is a term used to describe the discoloration (rust) of metal which in this case is the blade.

Harley and Monrogue talked about this over in the ALOX Durability thread so I thought it was going be a weathered Alox thread but Harley opened it up to include everything.

Ah I did not realize it was opened up to wear and other things like that. All the better really. We can never have enough pics of beautiful worn or patina tools.  :tu:

Found some old pics of the forced patina Opinel. I got this guy at a garage sale for $1. It had a broken tip. I ground it down a bit. I decided I wanted to give a forced patina a try and this was the result. It turned out good for a first go. I sharpened it on a........ (never thought I would admit this)....... a....(gag's a little), pull through sharpener.  This was before I had my Sharpmaker or any real sharpening setup. Funny things is I have never sharpened it since and it is still very sharp even though the edge is completely chipped all the way down. I have been using it for odd jobs and letter opening for years without sharpening. Next time it will get a proper edge put on it on the Sharpmaker. Anyways, I want to clean it and do a new patina job on it.

@Cpt Spaulding, I'm a bit new to this forum, but is using a pull-through sharpener not the best idea? Or were you just having a bit of a laugh? I'm currently using the Lanksy Blade Medic for my SAKs.
