An Insult to MT's around the world.

By far one of the worst articles written. And if you think that's too harsh you should read some of the things people said on the Facebook Comments....

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/car-accessories/a26604/the-best-multitools-for-any-car-guy/?src=ign_ai&mg=roa&dom=fb

Really? A MUT? Are you kidding me?

Those are probably the worst four MT's to keep in your car.

"Ohh, a flat tire. Honey, pass me the spoon..."

I must agree with David, is the authors opinion. It may be a really terribly bad one, but it is his opinion.

The only ones I'd agree with are the Victorinox Cadet and Classic SD. My minimum is a screwdriver and blade.

If the Tread were half as expensive (at least, it should be about a third in my opinion) I'd likely consider one since it's bladeless and can fit on my wrist, freeing up pocket space.

I've been looking at buying a CRKT Eat'n Tool, not as an EDC M/T, but as something to keep in my camping eating kit along with my cookpot, matches, and Esbit stove so I don't have to borrow a spoon from the kitchen.  But still, they don't call it an eating tool without reason, that's what it's main purpose is.

The MUT is aimed at the military and M-16/AR-15 owners, not the average Joe.

Why did they pick some of the most odd multitools on the market?

That is what my father does, although is more of a tool bag. MT are too expensive here to leave in the car, so he keeps some wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers and some other stuff.

For those who wonder why a MUT... well it has a hammer :D, see Jeremy Clarkson.

Question is what do you need a MT for in a car? In my life I have done two repairs to a car (I don't have a drivers licence so that is actually not bad).
- Replacing a flat tire (no MT will ever be able to do that)
- Replace a headlight-unit (no tools required, older model Mazda I guess from mid '90).

So, what you need is something for:
- nail-care (Cadet & Classic, this is important, better have redundancy)
- Olive eating (Spork, I would have preferred a fish-scaler but that might be just me).
- Impress a girl, when your car doesn't do it (Tread )
- Belt cutter (Mut)

For me that seems like a reasonable choice :tu:

A bit more serious

The Mut is not a bad choice as it has a big blade, screw-drivers and pliers. Having a belt-cutter seems like a good addition. A hammer, even such a small one has its uses.
Mostly useless are the wood-saw unless you have one of those old station-wagons (a problem it shares with most MTs) and also useless are the two gun-specific tools (I really wish they would make a civilian version).

Overall, not the worst choice.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I like the MUT tho I wouldn't reach for it as my first choice for my car tool bag.  Tread,  I've not handled one but can it do simple tasks?  None come to mind  :D however.

Spork,  :tu: I actually have no problem with this choice.  How the heck am I gonna eat my cup o noodles when I'm waiting out a blizzard on the roadside ( ok I've never been in a blizzard ).

Cadet  :tu: again no problem with this tool.

These are the tools you need for working on cars:

Long shafted screw drivers, most automotive screws are hidden in shafts to keep then out of sight. Think of the dedicated Swisstool and Supertool screw drivers.

Small screw driver to undo those annoying clips that hold the connectors in place on almost everything. Think of interior lighting, engine sensors, headlights etc...

Heavy duty plier that is capable of losening and tightening small to medium size bolts and nuts. Also Swisstool or Supertool(mut surge) pliers.

If you are really getting in to it you need a bit set with torx up to T40 because manufacturers are starting to use torx screws more and more on even simple parts and covers.

The author however thought that a spoon or carbon scraper might come in handy

Wow, these are some of the poorest choices I think you can make.  I can, however think of worse choices, such as:

(new) Schrade Tough Tool ST1-

The perfect tool for impromptu car repairs for people that don't know about car repairs.  Park at the side of a highway, call for roadside assistance and while waiting, grab a random engine part with the pliers and give a moderate squeeze to crush the pliers so that way when the tow truck arrives and it turns out to be something simple, you can insist that you would have fixed it except your tool broke.

Leatherman Raptor-

All the tools you need to help someone who has been in an accident, but with only slightly less mechanical related features than the Leatherman MUT!

Swiss Tech Bodyguard-

Audible personal alarm is loud enough to drown out your sobs of frustration when you realize you don't even have the functionality to tighten a clamp on that loose radiator hose!

As for the list of tools they have posted, well they wouldn't be my choice.  Can you imagine trying to do any of the car type repairs at the side of the road with any of those tools?  Let's face it, classic cars break down- most of them are decades old, and no matter how well looked after they are they will suffer issues.  I think of many of the issues that have stranded me at the side of the road in my day and I really can't see any of those tools being ideal.  I can't see swapping a distributor rotor with a Tread, I can't see pulling fuses with a Cadet, and I sure as heck can't see replacing a serpentine belt with a MUT.

My guess is this guy doesn't actually do any of his own maintenance, but instead hires people to fix things for him, then stands around repeating technical sounding terms with a beer in his hand.

"Why yes, I do believe the manifold got flooded which fried the turbo and that backed up the fuel pump."

I see some use about these. If you drive and stop to pick up some snacks, these are ok to help you while eat in the car stuff you bought from shop. And help you opening packages etc. Not so much tools for repair or emergency tasks. Though mut you can use some repair help as well. But clearly tools you can use when spend time in car.
