Good looking coat mate  :tu:

My "El Cheapo" one I got off ebay arrived today, and for £20 I'm quite impressed. I reserve the right to change my mind the first time I wear it in the rain though  :P I've not owned a wax jacket since I was at school, and that one was a genuine Barbour. Putting this one on doesn't have the same heavy duty feel that I remember from my old one, but it doesn't feel in any way inadequate. I'll be very interested to see how it copes with it's first downpour  :D

Cheers Gareth. Yeah, it's the price tag that makes it a real winner  :D

It's a pretty lightweight canvas really, as you'd probably imagine. It doesn't have that weight or stiffness that a new premium wax jacket has, and it certainly wouldn't live up to life in the country like a proper one would. For urban wear as a foul weather coat, or even just for chucking in the car for the times you get caught out, I'm pretty certain it'll do just fine  :)

Sure. Here's the link ....

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Mens-Padded-Wax-Jacket-UK-MADE-HUNTING-FISHING-HIKING-WALKING-COUNTRY-FARM-/161843517274?nav=SEARCH

That looks like a bargain for £20!
What if you give it a good reproofing? That should make it pretty watertight shouldnt it?

I nipped out to the corner shop yesterday in it during a shower, and water beaded up quite nicely all over. I don't know how it will fare through harsher weather, but I think I certainly got my money's worth for the price  :tu:

You wanted pics. Here is one:

First impressions:
I love the way it feels like it will survive ww3.
Everything is stiched properly and there are pockets in all the right places. It has a "extensjon" (i dont know what its called)  on the back that alows me to move the arms and bend freely without it tightening around the back and arms.
Its a bit "oily" and smells a little of chemicals, but I think some airo g and use will fix that.

I have one question for our Australian members though. How cold is it in the winter down there? Its 8C here now (unusually warm) , and Im sweating in this jacket.  With a warm sweater under, which it was designed for, I would melt.

G'Day,

Congrats on the jacket, look after it and it will serve you well for many years.

I have a couple of Driza-bone coats and jackets. All more than 10 years old. They sell their own reproofing "stuff" to re-treat the coats. One word of advice from an old hand I met at a show once: Never hang oilskin jackets, they will need reproofing sooner that a coat that has been folded or rolled. Over time the oils tend to drain out of the coat and compromise the waterproof abilities. I have oilskin pouches that I store all my coats in, do make sure they are dry!!! As for washing them, use cold water and a soft brush to get the dirt off. I find that the dark brown coats don't show dirt much. If you have kids get them to use the garden hose and hose you down. Lots of fun.  :D

Some parts in Oz will get very cold.

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks for the info pietervn!

I gave it a good test today. Went on a 10km walk in the woods. It feels great to wear.
I also like the big collar than can be flipped up to shield the neck from the wind.

Nice! Like the storm flap on the zipper....that's a quality detail usually omitted from many coats.

Great looking coat mate.  I'm certain it'll be a favourite for many years.  Also I think there's a good chance you'll be buying a lighter weight one for the warmer months. :D

Agreed. I like my bad weather jackets/coats to protect my neck all the way up as I don't really like wearing scarves and long neck sweaters (love 'em) aren't for every day.

Oddly I think all my waxed jackets have a storm flap fitted.  Seems to be a common design detail on this style of coat.  I agree that they're a good idea on a foul weather jacket. :)

I had coats that were sold as rain jackets and featured a rainproof zippers that weren't. Flaps are better! :tu:

G'Day,

Grathr, the coat looks fantastic!

Driza-Bone has figured that one out  ;) They also add additional material over the shoulders on the coats for added waterproofing. The riding coats have been designed with horse riding as the main focus as we can see in the movie "Man from Snowy River". It gets quite cold their in the snowy mountains. We were their over September and it snowed down to 900m in a town called Jindabyne.

There is a very good book written about Frank Fisher who designed the original Driza-Bone riding coat: "Guilty To Driza-Bone". A very nice read and gives you a lot of detail and background about this Ozzie icon.

Cheers,

Pete

Ps. I dont have any illusions about me ending up looking like the guy in the picture

Judging by the backdrop, apparently this jacket is the thing to wear when you're out antiquing.

I have a few oilskin jackets, and a few Burke & Wills products and they've served me well.

As for "How cold is the winter?"

Where I live now  21C is a cold day.

My old joint  3-4C was pretty standard in winter (in the mornings anyway).

The jackets loosen up and get more comfortable / cooler after a while, but they can be pretty warm, especially if you're hiking or something.
