Flashlight options
on: October 28, 2015, 05:48:32 PM
Not sure where to put this but figured a flashlight is a tool so here it is.

Ok so I am in the market for a small pocket light that is a clicky. Can be tail or on the body somewhere it don't matter.

Would like multiple modes and some good brightness for a small light.

Trying to stay away from a 123 battery.

This is something I plan to EDC so smaller over brighter is better.

Any ideas?

Kam how do the modes work on this one?

Like always one way or some kind of memory?

I have the Preon P1 with an added tail clicky. It takes a single AAA. 3 regular modes plus some hidden modes.

Low 2lm, Med 10lm, high 70lm. Comes on in low, then med, then high. Cycle through all twice and then you get to various strobes, SOS, high-low beacon stuff.

Most of the time when i need light, I just need a little, so I much prefer the coming on in low thing.

Fenix LD09 is nice too.  A bit bigger than the 02 (AA instead of AAA) but longer runtimes and a bit brighter.  It's almost exactly the same size as a 3 layer SAK.  Modes are M-L-H-SOS.

I've just said this elsewhere but have a good look at the Eagletac D25A Clicky.  By far and away my favourite light: small enough, bright enough, easy UI, choice of Cool or Neutral LEDs, good level choices, well made etc etc.  If I could only keep one light then it would be this one.

Lightly press on the button while the light is turned on, will change the modes.
Med -> low - > High

Always at med setting when first turn on.

Yes that is part of my issue with my Olight. It comes on Med, High than Low which is what I need the most at work.

Well that and the twistyhead is a pain when your hands are full and you are using it a lot.

+1 on the LD09, I have one, great pocket EDC light.

Fenix LD11 is VERY promising , I don't own one yet though. Fenix LD12 is also very nice, not sure how durable the rubber side switch is. I carry it in my bag.

Edit: LD11 comes on at low, LD12 has mode memory.

The LD02 doesn't have memory.

The Lumintop Tool AAA is another favourite of mine and I do recommend it. It's even cheaper. And the clip is better. The mode sequence is the same like the LD02 (med - low -high), just I'm not sure about the brightness levels, but more or less the same.

Recently got an LD02 and like it a lot.  Pocket clip and split ring hole aside the light is bright and low enough, if that makes sense.

LD09 looks great and I have no issue with AA size especially with the added run time and mode.

And yet I tried Zebralight once, and will never try it again. Far too confusing. Zebralight is one of those love it or hate it things.

I find AA lights to thick to pocket carry comfortably. Thrunite is coming out with a AAA clicky that might be worth waiting for. Firefly-low-med-high if I remember correctly.

I'll second the Preon recommendation, because I have one.  No doubt the others listed are great as well.  It's very small/slim, and the Low-Med-High looks like what you'd want.  I just bought a 2xAAA body for mine to try it in that format.

Both the Preon 1 and the Zebralight AA light look like great options. Different but good.

The simpler ui on the Preon and option to use two AAA batteries.

The crazy output on one AA plus good moonlight mode not to mention I have a ton of AA stuff already.

I'd stay FAR away from the Preon.

I have a Preon 2, and yes its bright, it's build quality I'd outstanding.

However I've had nothing but issues, the light randomly dims, I got 12 minutes out of my last full set of batteries, and it doesn't seem worth it if I have to mod the tail cap clicky out of the box. (I had to add a stronger spring to provide some resistance, otherwise it would turn on in my pocket)

The LD02 seems popular and will probably be my next purchase.

As of right now I own 2 "nice" torches, a Preon 2 and a Nitecore EA41. If I were to carry one all day I would choose the Nitecore even though it practically a soda can. I just can't trust the Preon to work when I need it to.

I personally like the Streamlight 66318 MicroStream C4.
It meets all your requirements and if I may add throws a good amount of light for
a single "AAA" battery.

I've never had dimming issues.

The tail clicky IS fairly soft, and 'proud', or unprotected by crenellations. So there might be issues with activation in a pocket. I bag-carry mine, so never face that problem.

I have been doing a lot of reading and have heard nothing else about dimming. Could be he got a lemon.

I would pocket carry mine though so am not sold on the side unprotected button.

Fenix LD12...frickin' awesome (like Popeye's Chicken). Best light I've owned. Single AA but on high can easily light up the front gate 60-70 yards away. 4 modes you change on the light head so you don't have click through the levels. Remembers the last brightness setting so it's ready to go when you switch it on. Simple, durable and very well made IMO.

LD12 is awesome, but AA battery light is too big to EDc for what I need, so it stays in my pack.
