Finished shaping the escutcheon for the keyhole.  I made 2 in case I messed it up at any point. I will probably paint one of them and decide which to use when I've got the finish on the case.

It will be fixed with brass pins, which have to be short so as not to hit the lock body on the inside of the door.  I didn't have any suitable so I cut down some longer ones.   They actually turned out to be brass-plated steel, too tough for SAK pliers to cope with, but a Vic Spirit and a SOG PPP cut through them with ease.
Wowzeer.. those look great :tu:

Great work shibafu  :salute: I reckon the cabinet is going to more of a talking point than the contents!

I like how this is progressing very much. :hatsoff:

This will look excellent and maybe you'll even get requests from other members for their collections. :D

Well it feels like we're in the home straight now as I've started applying the finish to the case.  It's an antique pine tinted Danish oil.  I'll probably give it 5 coats of oil on the visible areas, then let it cure for a week or so before applying a final coat of wax.

Thats some beautiful work, I just used some scrap wood cut and finished it for my small collection.  The collection keeps growing, may have to do some more woodworking.

Nearly there now!  The oil has cured, and I've waxed and buffed it.  I've fitted the window (held in place by bead moulding nailed on the inside) and reassembled everything.

For the escutcheon I decided against the shiny brass with red enamel.  It just didn't go with the antique pine finish.  Dark, antique-looking brass fittings suit it better.  The dark patina is achieved using a combination of brine and fuming with ammonia, with the following method.  I did the hinges as well.

Quick method for darkening brass by ammonia fuming:
First prepare the brine: 2 tablespoons of salt in a cup of water.
And set up the fuming chamber.  I used a tupperware-type box.  Put some household ammonia in an open container inside the box.
Use soap or solvent to degrease the brass hardware.
Dip the brass in the salt water, then put it in the box (but not in the ammonia!) and seal it up.
It'll darken very quickly.  After a few minutes, open the box, give it another bath in the brine, and return to the fuming chamber.  After about 5 iterations of this process, it should be a solid, consistent black.
Then you can use wire wool to rub the patina back to get the desired degree of shininess.

Mounted on the wall and the shelves installed.

Since the top and bottom shelf spaces are hidden when the door is closed, those shelves are solid rather than clear.  In hindsight it would have made sense to have the plastic supplier cut them from opaque acrylic, but instead I made them from 3mm MDF and painted them in gloss white.

And finally... all filled up.  :ahhh

Well, nearly - there is an empty shelf... hmmm...

As you can see I also found an appropriate fob for the key.
