Robert, for a tenner I dread to think what kind of bone it is,but yes it's supposed to be smooth tobacco bone. It's a great pattern for a work knife! Finish on the scales isn't quite as good as on its Coal Miner cousin, but,as I said, for a tenner it's bang on!

Its most likely cattle shin bone. Better makers tend to buy only the bones from certain breeds/regions. You need a strong cow that walks a lot do it has good bone density. I seem to recall that south American cow bones were considered good.

It is amazing how good yellow looks on traditional knives - buck, case, GEC..

A quick photograph for reference.

Two "23" knives, of similar price, from the two main GEC brands.

I did buy it to use it, but never really did - I thought, when buying it, that the Grizzly jigging looked really sexy and I was going to use it to replace my SRM763 as my standard locking folder.

It just feels a bit thin for a knife with such a large, solid blade and the jigging is a bit "sharp" making it a bit uncomfortable for me to use regularly. Also, for a locking knife, the blade is harder to open than needed (noticeably harder than a locking or regular SAK and you can not pinch it open - you could damage a nail if you try to open it quickly)

It is a good looking knife with a really solid lock and looks very unusual to what everybody else carries.
I also do not want to get it rusty through use as it does, for some reason, rust easier than the other GECs I have.

I have no major reason not to use it, but the SS 763 ends in my pocket 90% of the time I want a locking knife.

Over at another forum I belong to that discusses traditional knives (esp GEC), it's the general consensus that on the GEC 23's and 73's, the ones with the lanyard hole are easier to open than the ones without. This is based on anecdotal evidence of people that own one or both that responded to the thread. The ones without a lanyard hole are usually all nail breakers.

My 23L has a lanyard hole and even with my RA, I can open it pretty easy....it's not weak by any definition but a very solid 6-7 on a 1-10 scale.

Mine again (for reference).

I am not aware of the forum you mention but at Bladeforums  there is a lot of discussions on GECs . It took them years to accept RR but its nice to see that the cheaper, good knives, get some love too.

The 23's have the reputation for being nailbreakers, especially the older ones like the GEC trapper I show above.
I can open it, but its not a pleasant feeling (biggest nailbreaker I have is probably a Camillus electrician..). I know some GEC fans (I am one too- fan not fanboy) feel obliged to say that they need/like a hard backspring and that it is a safety feature and that their grandpas knife was hard etc but SAKs work fine for all and are easy to open. I think that the hard springs was a mistake by GEC, - possibly because it came with the overall heavy duty construction of their knives (they all have a heavy duty feel, and gag to be used, as opposed to e.g. Queen which has more regular feeling knives) and possibly because of the fact that they use knife openers/coins/spoons to open their knives.(here is how I made one : http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,27862.0.html

However, on a locking knife the only good/useful thing about a hard backspring is that it stops it from opening accidentally or being opened by children (under 9{ish} - over that and they should have their own knives anyway). The spring on the bulllock is definitely softer than on the regular 23 line, but still too hard/uncivilised  for a knife that locks.

Incidentally I started a thread explaining from a physics point of view. how to open a knife a few years ago:

Yes it was Bladeforums in a thread last year...I see I was preaching to the choir! :2tu: Yes, the hard springs on GEC's keep me from buying more...I have 3 given to me as gifts.. 2 were were kinda broke in so I can use them and one is an EO 25.

I can't find the thread now but as I remember it was a thread on springs and toward the end someone made the observation about the lanyard hole and others chimed in on the subject confirming it with their experiences.

I remember the thread, though I am not a BLF member (I do spent a looot of time there, so maybe I will join one day)

What I did find to work on some hard RRs was to leave them with the spring under tension for a few days. My theory is that this causes some micro cracks/damage to the spring softening it. However, this may affect the life of the spring, so I would not do it on an expensive knife I plan to resell and make looooots of money in the future (by the way the  dollar to euro ratio is killing me.. I feel stupid paying 150 Euro on what used to be 100 Euro. It is not a money thing; I just feel robbed)
