3D printed replacement scales for 91mm SAK knives

I'm new to this forum, but a friend told me I should post the scales I made for my knife on here. I have a 91mm explorer that I have had since I was a kid. I ended up losing both of the scales off the sides but couldn't bring myself to get a new knife. I tried my hand at 3D printing some replacement plastic scales on Shapeways. It took me 5 attempts, but I think the results turned out beautifully. So far I have only tried plastic, but I modified the file to print in metal too. I really want to take a stab at printing some stainless steel scales that will snap on. I'm hoping to make different versions of the basic smooth scales that have textures, I just haven't had the time yet.

Very nice! That looks sharp. Have you tried adding toothpick and tweezer slots?

Word of warning though. The bushings that allow the scales to snap on are brass. Stainless Steel Scales could likely shear off the rim of the bushing, and make it impossible to snap any scales on again. Im not saying you shouldnt do it, just that you should be aware.

Thanks for the heads up. I can try it out with one of my "cheaper" heavily used knives first to make sure I don't have any issues. I'm not wild about the toothpick or the tweezers, but I might give it a shot just to see if I can do it.

Good way to get plastic scales in colors not commercially available.   :tu:

The shapeways steel is pretty bad though, so test with caution as it is a bronze sintered steel mixture.  Its a 60/40 mix of 420/bronze.

Nice!  I thought about doing 3D printing for scales, but haven't had the time to really look into how to do it.  I'll have to look into Shapeways...thanks for the tip.   :cheers:
