Swiza D03
on: November 19, 2015, 05:07:35 PM
Thanks to our friendly Swiss moderator I got my hands on a Swiza D03

I went for the larger sized version, with the corkscrew and in red, as it looked more "proper" to me. The D04 has the Philips head screwdriver in place of the corckscrew.

The basic knife has been described by several others, so I will not talk about that.

It feels nice and looks OK made, reminding me of German slipjoints for some reason.

size comparison

the corkscrew is substantial. It does not share a backspring with the main blade, and it does not push up any of the tools when you open it.

the can opener's spring is soft and the tools do not have the nice "talk" of victorinox.

in front of the corkscrew, on the backspring, there is a small hole, similar to the hole you have for holding a pin on many victorinox 91mm models.

You can put a needle through it, but it is not held securely. You need a thick pin....

Just a thought....

That "pin" area. Could you put a split ring through that for attaching a lanyard? I don't think there's an alternate attachment point is there?

possibly, but the corkscrew may not close properly if you do that.
I am sure there is a reason for the hole. I have not really researched it.

on a different note it feels like a GEC bullnose - I thought I was picking the swiza, in the dark, and 1 hour later when I checked, I saw that I actually had the bullnose in my pocket.

a victorinox blade will scratch a swiza blade, according to my accidental testing....  :)

So far I like it. It feels "right".

I have a D04. The red is more of an orange. It is nice and bright, should be hard to loose. So far I like it. I do wish it had a lanyard attachment point.

So I used it to help me install some Ethernet sockets, cut some plastic etc.

Here is a comparison picture with some Red Nylon/Celidor/Alox SAKs and a couple of orange knives too, to better get an idea of the red used.
Not as bright red as wenger and Victorinox, but definitely red.

and to get an idea of the blade size

Hm... I wonder more and more about their hardening process. They publish higher HRC and more carbon than Vic, but the SAK scratches the Swiza?

I used the pruner to open the swiza package, and touched, with little force, the side of the swiza's blade. The finish of the blade got a tiny scratch. Now, we are talking about the sharp tip of the pruner marking the blade's finish.
I have been using the swiza today to open clam shells and cutting plastic and I can not figure out where that original scratch was... The swiza blade is less shiny than a victorinox blade to begin with and the finish looks less tough. That does not mean the blade under is soft.

the small screwdriver was also used today (along with the larger one) and is fine.
again, the finish on the can opener/small screwdriver is not as good as on the victorinox-there is some burr on the edge/tip

I cut some lemons from the tree, with the D03 and then used it to cut the lemons in half.

I also used the bottle opener to  remove the cap from a bottle.

It worked, but it is not as good as the established Swiss gang.
The opener has a hook, a lip, at the bottom, designed I assume to hook under the caps ridges. However, it is too thick and just makes the bottom slip. Unnecessary differentiation.

Are the handles rubberized or they just look so?

They have that rubberised coating you find in many tools nowadays, but the cavers are solid plastic underneath (unlike for example a case sodbuster)

The coating feels thin but solid enough. The overall feel is nice, silky, sexy, nnr,... :dd: .... Actually it feels OK, but I have no idea how tough it is.

One thing i like about this one, is angle of the main blade to the handle. I have allways thought, and liked, that when you really need to cut something with a force, blade should be pointing more to the front. Like hawksbill type blade has. Swiza has that covered. I could see myself go for this newcomer for this reason.

as shown it is a linerlock, released with a wenger style push button on the cross.

the lock is in addition to the backspring (slipjoint system, like a normal victorinox, Wenger)
