knife suggestions
on: November 22, 2015, 10:04:13 PM
i am planning on getting my brother a folding knife for Christmas. I personally do not know a lot about folders and what is good and what is bad out there, so i need some help.  i am looking for something with a combo blade that is around 4 in. or so. My budget is around $80

i would appreciate the input,

thanks!  :)

Not a combo edge, but you definitely can not go wrong with the Spyderco Delica4. It is under your budget as well. I HIGHLY suggest it.

I forgot. You can get a Delica4 with Saber grind in combo edge, but the FFG blade is preferred in my opinion.

I'd get a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 - https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=472
You can get them at about the 100 USD mark in the States, maybe cheaper if you can snatch a deal...
Just love mine - great quality, great design, great slicer, great steel, perfect ergonomics, great G10 grip, perfect jimping and a wonderful locking system  :tu:

PS: Do note this is probably the most forged knife in the world so buy only from a proper dealer.

Ow you said combo blade.. the PM2 is either Plain or Serrated.

Mybe a Tenacious or a Resilience instead and take him to a strip joint with the rest of the pennies

Under your budget but an Ontario Rat 1 is a pretty sweet knife.

How did I know when I saw your name you would be suggesting the RAT.  :D

It trully is one of the best budget knives you can buy. (in my opinion of course)

I have not been one for combo edge knives but still have one or two that slot right into your price range.
One that is really standing out is the Spyderco Stretch CE.
Its around 3.5 inches though; the size and belly of the plain portion is handy and the serrations cut ropes and fibrous stuff well.
VG10 sharpens up easily on the Spyderco Sharp Maker and this can be an issue with CE blades.

If you want closer to 4 inch then go with the Endura. Same VG10 convenience and a super tough saber ground blade.

The Stretch is around $80 and the Endura can be found for about $65 in the USA.

Also consider a Victorinox soldier knife or Road tour knife, as they have combo edges and some extra tools too.

RATs are sweet. So are the CRKT M-16s. Also a SOG Trident Elite go for around $60. If you look around, sometimes you can find a SOG Vulcan for $80. Sypdercos are a safe bet also.

Another vote for the Victorinox One Hand Trekker, really versatile and useful selection of tools.

If i would give someone a knife it would be an EKA Swede 8. Perfect size, good quality and fit and finish, wooden scales and it costed me 50 euros. It is hard to give someone a knife because some like a traditional folder and others like tactical fighting knifes. I would personally not go for combo blades but that is my opinion.

+1 I have to say that nowadays this would be my choice.  Don't get me wrong, Spydercos are great.  I'm carrying a DF2 right now.  But for sheer utility with a serrated blade, the Vic is fantastic. :tu:

I would consider one of Kershaws fine knives. A number of them can be had for much less then your budget.

Of course Spyderco is great but you will pay for the quality. Like sharky said the Stretch or Endura will be excellent knives that will last for a very long time.

thanks for the input, guys. i sent my brother some picks of the spydercos to see if he likes them. he was not interested. turns out he just wants a gerber paraframe (a knife he has had in the past, but lost it). since they are pretty cheap and he is prone to losing things, im getting him a couple  :D

thanks again for the help!
