What is your favorite leatherman?
on: November 29, 2015, 04:35:00 PM
I don't know if there is already a thread for this but I am going to make another anyway to get the badge for the surge challenge. I want this thread to only have kind words, I have found this forum page to honestly be the kindest out there and I want it to stay like that. Only constructive or clarifying questions or be nice to others. My favorite tool is my surge, I loved my super tool 300 but I wanted scissors and outside knives and the surge was the same size so that's what I bought and I love it.
I have a Leatherman surge, rebar, wave, and a super tool 300. I can also solve 3x3x3, 2x2x2, and 2x2x4 rubix cubes.

Those are very nice. I don't have a preference if they are new or stock I just wanna know what are some of the more prefer tools out there. I don't have many but I do enjoy my wave if I'm going to be walking more and don't need the larger pliers.

Well, i just love my Surge. Great hand filler with good set of tools. And great size knife blade.

Second comes Fuse. Nice lightweight tool packed with most used tools inside. Comfortable to use.

Is the blade on the Surge any bigger then the blade on say a Wave?

Yes

Huh I seem to remember before I got my Surge doing some research and wondering why it was not bigger then the Wave. Maybe I was wondering why it is not to much bigger.

Ok I was curious so looked it up on the LM site.

Wave: 2.9 inches

Surge: 3.1 inches

Looks like your streak continues, barely.

 My favorite in this order,

1. Surge
2. Wingman
3. Micra
4. Supertool 300
5. Wave

I would like the Wave more if it had outside opening scissors.

How do people enjoy the black oxide, is it messy for a few days or like a month? how does it do with scratching and scuffing?
I'm enjoying the pictures and answering

I like the BO look on my LM tools.

It is indeed messy for a while but it eventually goes away and you are left with a great looking tool that resists rust and wear very well.

Tricky.. LM Wave II gen. with the bit kit is very versatile but it´s not my most carried because it is not really a pocket carry and I couldn´t walk around with a sheath every day.
The Squirt PS4 is a great little EDC item but a tad to small.

I think what is missing is a middle size EDC home-run multi tool for pocket carry from Leatherman.
The Juice S2 has the form factor, size and a decent tool set but some of the implements are not really good.
The Skeletool is lacking in ergonomics and is just cumbersome to work with.
I would like something like an upsized PS4 or downsized Wave. I realize you can´t just scale them, it doesn´t work like that.

PST II.  I bought a used one for $16 earlier this year, and have used it considerably since.   It allows me to only have to carry a thinner SAK (for plain blade, saw, and awl, and sometimes corkscrew, since the PST II has a Phillips), usually the 108mm German Army Knife.

Retired models I'd like to find that I like: PST, Mini Tool (full-size pliers in keychain tool size), first gen Wave (I hate removable bits, I can barely keep up with SAK scale tools), and Squirt E4 (because wire strippers are always handy).

Current:  Super Tool 300 and Rebar (better locking mechanism than the original model Super Tool, plus replaceable cutters in case I try to overdo it).  Still don't have them, yet.  Lowes ran out of Rebars when they were on sale, quick.

Don't think I actually posted an answer to the OPs question, I know when does that ever happen here?

For me it is a very close three way race between the Surge, Wave and Rebar.

In the end though the Wave wins out based on weight vs the Surge and with the sweet outside tools vs the Rebar. Of course it has to be upgraded with the Rebars plier head but messing around with your tool is half the fun.

That is a nice mod for a wave...only wondering if that small flat head could be swapped to the scissors again.

I imagine so, Breezy did this mod for me so.will wait for him or Lobby to.come along and answer for sure.

Imo though it is better to just let the lame LM scissors go and use the most excellent Vic offering.

I haven't used Victorinox scissors in a while but I do agree the wave/charge scissors aren't much help, however I have found the surge scissors to be incredibly useful.
