Big knives
on: December 12, 2015, 03:16:05 PM
Some things needed doing but I'm in a ridiculous holiday mood, so I used a CS kukri machete  to turn a 3m Ficus into a 2m lollipop.
Strange thing was, except for the wasp sting it was the quickest I've ever gotten that job done...

So I had a shower and a few beers....and a thought....
Large knives are not part of the culture here, more a case of pangas and large axes.
I like big knives, so I just took to a native tree, the Bush Willow, with my BK2 and BK9.
To be sure this is not a hardwood, and there is method to the local preferences considering how hard the predominant Acacia trees are.

It is however stunning to see those pieces of carbon steel glide through wood, considerably less effort in this case than any saw would be.

These knives are part of my collection, but the intention is not to keep them pristine.
I have decided to not strip them, but I do intend to beat them up a bit.  8)

I got a set of Land Cruiser leaf springs for free.
Since I now have the means to flatten them out and anneal them in the process, I'm just waiting for my salary (and hopefully a bonus) so I can get a basic belt grinder so the fun can start.

News......

My new angle grinder is great  8)

I need hearing protection....... :pok:

Did you know black is slimming?  I cut one of the springs in half and used a sanding disc to clean it up a bit......and suddenly realised it look very thick.....and this was the thinner spring!
Turns out what I guessed was about 6mm (i.e. perfect) is actually 8mm

Now for the good news, I cut out a rough blank yesterday, imagine a BK2 with a bowie tip.....actually tanto at this stage.
Even rough like that it feels lighter than a BK2!

My holiday starts in about 9 hours, then the fire will be lit so I can flatten and anneal the blank.

Finished a bit late and had to feed the dogs and myself......pics to follow  :salute:

LOL.

The old axiom "Necessity is the mother of invention" appears to be applicable here.

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."    **Benjamin Franklin**

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob
