My Firestarter Kit for Merit Badge
on: December 31, 2015, 10:58:24 PM

Made some fresh Pet Balls and took some pics for the Fire Starter merit badge. This is my backpacking setup. They all go in a zip lock bag. I will throw in more Pet Balls and an additional Match box for week long trips which I hardly do these days. What I got here is good enough for 1-2 nighters.

For igniters 1. Match Sticks 2. Flint Rod on Mag Bar 3. Signal Ferro Rod (last resort)
For tinder 1. Pet Balls 2. Mag shaving on wax paper 3. Dry grass on location (last resort)

For car camping I take a bbq lighter and for high altitude trips I take a bigger Ferro Rod and Wetfire tablets for tinder. I will take pics of those when I sort out my gear sometime soon.

Match Sticks and Pet Balls in action. Quick and easy. Burn time around 2-3 minutes.

Mag shavings using Signal's saw top. Used the Signal's Ferro Rod to ignite. Worked very well but not as sparky as bigger Rods. Burn time is about a minute.

How you like the Signal?

I like it a lot mainly because it's fairly light weight for it's size and gets the job done even though some tools are awkward to use. It's far from perfect but I am glad LM is trying to make an outdoors tool. Hopefully we will get an ergonomically better Signal down the line. That's where the biggest complain is by most.

In my opinion they need to beef up the survival implements of this tool fist. They are good enough to use as a last resort but they should change that so we use them as our first choice. It's challenging because they need to keep the size and weight down. I think trying to re-use pieces from other tools and using the MUT platform for this tool was a mistake. They should have come up with something totally fresh.

My car camping fire kit and the kit I use for extreme weather.

For car camping I mainly use bbq lighters and I take two of them. I like the ones where you can see how much lighter fluid is in the reservoir. The other backup items go in a Q-tip box. Extra mantels, tent pole cords, para cords, etc used for fixing stuff also goes in this box.

When I know it's going to be wet or at altitude I take along my easy fire kit. This is in addition to my backpacking fire kit. The wetfire tablets are a dollar a piece but worth it. It catches fire in all the conditions I have tried it on. That with UST's one handed fire starter, I know I can get a fire going even with gloves.

My wet fire setup to the test. Dunked in water first. Got to use the Singal hammer too :D  With gloves, one handed, eyes closed (kidding)... no problemo. Burn time is about 5-6 mins.

Nice kits.  I bring Zip fire starter in my camping fire kits.  That stuff smells awful but it freaking burns like crazy.  I have used the duraflame fire blocks with good results but those are mostly for getting fire pit fire going.  The Zip seems to burn hotter to me and while I have not tested some reports are that it will burn even when wet.

I remember seeing the Zip fire starters at the store but did not know any one using them first hand. If they inexpensive I will give it a try.

There are some good youtube videos of the Zip fire started being lit with ferro rods.  These suckers burn and burn hot.
