Powernoodle's 30 Day SOG PowerAssist badge quest
on: January 01, 2016, 02:47:59 PM
DAY 1

I'll be carrying and using only the SOG PowerAssist for the next 30 days.  As I never pass up an excuse to buy another MT,  I bought a couple of them for this challenge in black oxide and stainless flavors.  I have maybe 3-4 PowerLocks in the Powernoodle Arsenal, but prefer outside opening blades and so I wanted to give the PowerAssist a try.

I have always been impressed with the smoothness of SOG MTs, and of course the compound leverage of the plier head.  I have stared at the SOG compound pliers on many occasions, and still can't quite wrap my head around how the leverage is multiplied. My shriveled brain has a hard time absorbing the simultaneous action of 7x interconnected pivot points and 4x interlocking gears.  But I do understand the basic principle of multiplied leverage and that's good enough for me.  I imagine a long lever applied to a fulcrum - but literally 11x more complicated - and I'm satisfied with that.  Sort of satisfied.  Not really.

I am not a tremendous fan of the tools being buried under the cover, but we will see how that goes.  Its basically a 5-step process to deploy the phillips driver, and another 5 steps to stow it.  But on the other hand, my perceived need for speed greatly surpasses my actual need, and so I find that "slow" tool deployment is not really as bad as I imagine it to be.  I need to slow down anyway. Zen and the Art of SOG Deployment.

I may do a Zoidberg grind job on the pliers as this thing gets underway [i.e., converting the needlenose to blunt nose], but we'll see how it goes.  Thanks also to Obi for being crazy enough to come up with these challenges.

I hope this doesn't confuse you more, the gears are the first fulcrum point, the plier pivot is the second.

If I close one eye and tilt my head, it makes perfect sense.

It is somewhat analogous to a cyclist in first gear, going up a steep hill.  There is a small input force over a large distance (legs turning easily but rapidly), translating into a large force over a short distance (slow travel up a steep gradient).

Day 9

The V-Cut took care of the loose edge of this beloved and well-used table tennis paddle.  This paddle took me to victory at the 2012 MTO World Championships in Stockholm, where I narrowly defeated Obi in a final set tiebreaker.  Obi responded with world championships in 2013 and 2014 using his Durian-stained paddle he called "stinkfruit".

Okay, I'm using the PowerAssist to open the Swisstool X prize I won in December's Surge Challenge.  Got it?

Thank you Obi and MTO!        I'll begin EDCing the Swisstool X on the first day that I stop doing Obi's monthly Challenges - whenever that may be.

As we all know, the best use of an MT is to open new MT packages.

The PowerAssist's compound pliers really do make a noticeable difference in gripping power.

When your PowerAssist gets carried much and used little, sometimes you post stylistic still photos rather than contrived actions shots.  Yet throughout, the PowerAssist remains at my side, ready for duty. :salute:

Day 12

Ingredients for "Mean Green" juice drink: kale, celery, cucumber, green apples, ginger and lemon.  Cut with PowerAssist serrated blade to fit in juicer.

When chilled, its quite tasty.  And it totally fuels my midichlorians.

I'm totally with you on the smoothies. Generally not my thing.  Mrs. Powernoodle does the smoothie thing every morning.  But what I have is a juicer, so my Mean Green is pure juice.

I got the idea for this from watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead on Netflix.  Its a pretty interesting story line, and not preachy like some others in this genre.  The guy basically lost a bunch of weight and turned his health around by going on a juice-only diet.  I do think the constant flood of veg nutrition would be awesome for the body.

I also like the V8 brand "veggie blend" juices, which are pretty tasty and much easier than the 30 minute process of making juice and cleaning the juicer.

I'm 60 pounds overweight and have to get a handle on it.   :salute:

I'm going to power through the rest of this Challenge (yeah, there's a pun in there), but I am looking forward to getting this one over with.  The PowerAssist is a pretty capable MT, but I'm missing my other toys.  Mostly notably, the Swisstool X that Obi gifted to me, as well as an MP600 BO with blunt pliers and old cutters that I've been dying to play with.
