BlackTip Fishing Multi-Tool
on: January 04, 2016, 01:05:36 PM
After a couple years of drooling at the pics over here I gave in and bought one from a fellow MToer.

It arrived three weeks ago. Here it is with another SOG product, the Switch Plier 2. Good looking tools.

A quick search located a pic of the packaging with the following statement:

At BlackTip™ our goal is to develop innovative, state-of-the-art fishing products for the serious offshore angler. All BlackTip™ tools are designed and tested by fishermen, for fishermen. Through offshore ocean testing and evaluation, we strive to continually develop and manufacture the highest quality fishing products our customers have come to expect; tools that deliver exceptional performance in the harshest saltwater environments.

Quite the intro that eh.

Not trying to be mean here but after handling the tool I am left wanting.

So this thread is to cover a few of the issues I have with the MT and in a few weeks after I've taken it fishing I'll do an update.

Blade lock locks, designed for the PowerAssist.
Positives: prevents unwanted deployment, double locks the blades open.
Negatives: difficult to manipulate, uncomfortable hot spots.

Any pressure to the back of the blade will push the cutting edge into contact with the lock release.

It happens when closing the blade too.

I've borrowed this PowerAssist pic from ducttapetech.
Compare the insert and note the thumb stud resting on it.
The insert on a BlackTip is too short to support the thumb stud.

Not the best pic sorry but the light reflection does indicate some damage to the blade edge.

Big thick hook, tiny thin blades, multiple sharp edges.

Space, lots of wasted space.
Tools sit high, awkward to deploy, the hot spots: thumb studs, lock releases, lock locks, handle ends...
That was enough for me so I completely gutted the handle.

Piano locks, so very pretty, I count six. Number of tools in the handle, five. More wasted space.

It would appear the tiny lanyard ring is facing opposite (flipped over) to other pics I have seen of them.

Probably doesn't matter much, I'm not quite sure how I'm meant to use it anyway...

BlackTip on top, Switch Plier 2 below.
Despite the Switch Plier 2 having a one for all type spring, the tools are much easier to unlock.
Have to wonder how well the piano locks will work fishing at night off a sand bar.

Blacktip was my first SOG MT, it's fit n finish impressed me but not its design, therefore I stayed away from SOG for a long time until I got the PPP.

In plier mode.
The Switch Plier 2 has a rounded handle that is comfortable to use.
The BlackTip has a pointy handle that digs rather uncomfortably into your hand.

All you say above it's true, but I love that I can easily mod mine and you gotta admit those pliers have FORCE in their bite.

As some others have said, where will you find a bigger, meaner, shinier MT?

And are long, precise, smooth...If you want a needlenose, precise and astoundingly strong pliers, i think you can't beat the Blacktip!

My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

Update! With a month of salt water fishing tests completed here are my findings.

Negatives:

Rinsed thoroughly after every use, towel dried then hung on a line but still it rusted.
Worst bits were the phillips, file, lanyard ring, plier teeth and unpolished plier areas.
Most could be scrubbed off but that's a mission.

Small flat screwdriver is so very delicate.
Can opener, works better backwards than forwards, leaves a rather jagged edge.

Lanyard ring is too small and in the way.

Borderline:

File didn't work well on most things however the edge cut through pvc pipe when needed.
What I did like about it was the scraper on the end, that worked well and was very useful.

Ruler, no good for drawing a line, was good as a quick estimate on the fish size.

Small phillips screwdriver, if it fits right you can twist the head off a screw.

Bottle opener did the job.
Large flat screwdriver also works in #3 phillips screws.

When using the screwdrivers, with pliers open can be awkward, with pliers closed can be uncomfortable.

Positives:

The long needle nosed pliers are great, easy to get in to where the hook is without getting bit.
The compound leverage works well with the plier head to provide an excellent grip on the hook.
The gears and pivots all worked well even when completely covered in blood, guts, bait and sand etc.

And finally... wait for it... the scaler!
Having tried and not liked them in the past I generally use my bait knife.
Not any more.
Works well, easy to use, easy to clean, I like it.

Great new post! Good to see your Blacktip in action.  Love that last pic.  How's it holding up to the salt water?
