Do people really use the EDC stuff that they show in the photographs...???

That is my question...

I see many other webpages like Facebook and Instagram, EDC web pages and so...

So beautiful and expensive stuff
No scratches, no beated, no seem damaged...
No fear or lost or damage or the risk of confiscation if they carry expensive or collectible knives and tools??
(if you pocket carry or sheath carry things you know many times is impossible avoid the dust, wear and scratches...)

They really use their EDC components or is only pose...?  ???

The items in their photos look ideal and perfect, in pristine conditions!!!
Perhaps I am very neglected...

Thank you for your opinion

P.S.: I am not talking about collection items showed, but carried...!!!

I think some do in fact carry such items.  Many work in environments like offices and labs so the tool will show less wear than say contractor.  I will also say that some tools are pretty resilient, take for example the Swisstool and Spirit.  I have used mine extensively ( Swisstool ) and it shows little wear.  The only thing that showed wear was the red paint but I ended up taking it off.

I'd say Alox would really show wear if pocket carried tho using a nice soft sheath would slow it.  Same goes for Celidor IMO.

SS is tuff stuff so depending on how and what one uses their tools on or if they drop them they should look good for a long time.

My polished Waves don't show much wear.  There is only a scratch from it falling onto a sidewalk.  Wear on the plier jaws serrations however theres certainly that.  All my LM bits show a lot of wear as do my BO tools.

I use all the stuff I show in photographs (I don't take many so its somewhat of a moot point).

I think a lot of people carry their EDC, but carrying doesn't necessarily mean using. You may carry a flashlight all the time, like me, but you may not end up in a dark place and you may not need it at all. So it'll remain intact.

My stuff is always used and it often shows on the looks. I don't care if the thing is expensive. I don't buy things I can't afford to buy and therefore I'm not worried if I lose it or damage it. Also, I think that when I buy expensive stuff, I'm supposed to pay for quality, so the stuff being expensive means durability and quality and therefore I should be even less afraid.

Working at an office, I don't use my EDC items extensively but they do get some use now and again. Also at home. Since I'm always obsessively cautious with my things, they don't show much wear.

Most of my stuff looks NIB

- I'm very careful with my stuff (don't put my Alox with my keys etc.)
- I'm a light user, I don't need to fix a a steam engine, I need to fix computers (mostly aluminum)
- I work in an office and Switzerland is known for its cleanliness. I get in no troubles with larger knife but if I pull out a rusty one they probably beat me up :P
- I need my tools infrequent, I'm a programmer. However, every-time I need a screwdriver or whatever I'm really glad to have one.

That said I try to avoid too expensive stuff, especially for pocket carry as I'm to nervous about loosing stuff.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

What Sreve said!

Most days I've an idea of what tool use to expect,so if I was expecting to have to do lots of remerchandising, and moving shelves,I'd not carry a LM Mini or PST,I'd take my Spirit,or my Fuse,or a MP600

Likewise if there's going to be a lot of box bashing I'd bring my Tattoosteve Alox,or a Harvester rather than an Oppie or a Spydie
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

There is definitely a lot of stuff that gets showed in EDC threads, but not carried.  Especially on another forum that I visit.  When I show my EDC stuff, I like for it to be stuff I actually carry and use.  And you will often see items that are more akin to man-jewelry true EDC items, like fancy lights, glowy fobs and so forth.  To each his own.  My EDC tends to be more utilitarian and less blingy.

  • It is what it isn't.
I think alot of gear in pics is just for show.

Now I don't use my items very often at all on a daily basis so mine normally looks new but what I do carry, whether it is a Wave, SC or folder is carried to be used if need be and I have no problem in using it hard or even breaking it if that is whats needed at the time to take care of business of whatever the situation I may be in.  My stuff is replaceable.

I don't own or carry anything just for show!  :)

If it's an EDC thread, I carry it that day. Usually only carry stuff that's used or bought used but some of my MT's rarely get used even if I carry them that day. These days, my days are pretty uneventful so my stuff stays looking nice for a very long time....

I don't carry everything all the time.  I have what I think I will really need in my pockets and the rest in a bag.  Things like spare batteries are in the bag and that gets left in the car most of the time.  On my recent trip to the keys I carried everything with me because I was on foot and away from the car for most of the time.  I was carrying a Stansport waist pouch, across my chest, with everything I usually have, plus the extra tourist stuff, a map and guide book, camera, pocket first aid kit, and a couple of water bottles.  I find the cross chest carry more comfortable and more accessible than something like a messenger bag.  If anyone knows of a good cross chest type of bag I'm looking for one to replace the waist pouch which suffices, but isn't made to be used that way.  I saw this one on Ebay and I'm thinking about it.

Depending on the topic of the thread, if it is referring to specific items, I may crack open the bat cave to take a couple pictures of gear I have squirreled away. To include in a thread about those items.

My typical daily carry stuff usually only rotates between a couple different knives, maybe, a light, and a minichamp. So my daily stuff is pretty boring and not real photogenic.

I carry and use all of my EDCs. Be it my tiny flashlight or my lipbalm. I carry them every day with keys and coins and stuff. I don´t worry about scratches and dings. It´s a tool and that´s what it is made for.

Honestly - I have some items I don´t carry regularly or just for special occasions.

Sometimes I don´t have coins in my pocket, sometimes I carry my knife and light in my jacket, separated from each other.

I carry to use them. I carry them to feel good and prepared. I don´t own so much expensive stuff.  :hatsoff:

I like show off on forums. Maybe for some it is more hobby to collect EDC that seems to include all most important stuff. Kind like survival, collecting in case needed. Anyway there are sometimes good ideas. I don't edc much. But in some cases / days might have also heavier set (so all I have is for use, just some have more heavier use then others).

Most of my stuff (about 99%) is NIB  :-[.

When I buy something "special", I will never carry it, and it will only be used for fiddling.  When I buy a "regular" tool, I'll carry it a couple of days, and if it doesn't suit my needs it will go back in the box and in the collection, if it turns out it covers my EDC needs, I'll buy another one of the same tool so I can keep one NIB and the other one will become a user (sometimes I buy more than two of the same tool, for example: Spirits, Swisstools ...  ::)).

I love when people post their nice gear.  If you carry stuff as man jewelry thats great.  I don't think I have anything that would be considered man jewelry, YET .

I don't post my EDC since its pretty much the same day in and day out.  I do love seeing everyones else post theirs.

  • My Wenger...
What ever I post, is used daily. I am a locksmith and having a SAK is like carrying a small tool box with you everywhere. So it looks nice? It should. It is cared for like the Swiss tool it is.

That means every month without fail, it gets opened up completely, brushed out, cleaned of every bit of dust, crumb of what ever - and if needed sharpened. Then it gets a quick coat of car wax, and buffed out. That covers the daily grind on the tool. A drop of Vic Multi tool oil on the hinges and it is ready to go back into service.

Depending on the job - it is either the Vic S54, or the XLT - one or the other, although the files and saws on the XLT are getting flat, which is why I bought the S54. I do have two of those however. The Vic S54 is current production and that is the one I carry. The Wenger is a display queen due to I don't want to loose that one or have something happen to it due to the rarity of having the original S54 in my collection.

I do have others which get toted from time to time, like the SOS kit, when I get dressed up and don't want the thing in my pocket, and have the rest of the stuff with me. Also in that group is the deluxe SOS with the double pouch - that ends up again being old and special, so here again I have a "spare" but it is as well an original which is no longer in production, so out of production SAKS get to be display queens.
The early bird may get the worm, but it is second mouse which gets the CHEESE !!

The only easy day was yesterday.

Can't speak for Facebook, (I don't even use it, for various reasons) but I certainly use my stuff. Some things in my EDC don't get used much/at all just because of their nature. For example, my emergency poncho and my firemaking supplies. But when it comes to any knives, MTs, etc I use them all the time. If you look closer at my various MTs you'll see nicks, scuffs, scratches, perhaps a damaged screwdriver or twelve

Good question.

For me I have noticed a lot of my gear stays pretty nice. Not because Ibdo not use it but just because I rotatevthru a lot of stuff.

I also am of the opinion that most of us here take much better care of our tools and knives then those strange little people who do not think of tools and the like as a hobby.
