The KEBOOP : KEyring BOx OPener
on: January 25, 2016, 03:04:28 PM
I had a spare part of Ti 55*25*2mm and wanted to make something like a keyring tool out of it.
Here is the KEBOOP : KEyring BOx OPener
It's main purpose is to open boxes (break tape mostly) so it has a corner that is sharp enough for the job, but dull enough not to accidentally cut the user.
Secondary functions are : cap lifter, belt cutter and wire bender
Vic Sentry (84mm) for scale :)

Ti has been anodized at 57V, but this time i could achieve a light blue that even has some yellow accents (in the very right side)

Hope you like it :)
Feel free to build one based on this and improve my simple design

Here my main limitations were the material: the Belt cutter can't be used many times as the Ti grade 2 can't be hardened enough to hold sharpness for long, and the 2mm thickness prevent the tool to be used as pry bar. But, it is extremely lightweight!!
The main hole took me ages to drill (needed to use 2, 4, 6, 8, 10mm drill bits one after the other!!)

I've just noticed i forgot the WIP pictures:
Raw material:

It took me ages to drill that hole, to prevent the piece from spinning and ruin my hand i fixed it with an home made ghetto clamp:

Testing the belt cutter (before anodizing):

Usage feedback:
- Box opener works extremely well to break tape seals
- Belt cutter works better than expected to cut the PET packing belts (no wearing signs after a few days of intense usage)
- I didn't even tried the cap lifter btw...

Ti-6-4 can be used ok for a cutting edge if you lay down some carbide on one side, and do a chisel grind.  It ends up being like a beaver tooth and self sharpens.  It never is as sharp as a steel edge, but perpetually maintains a good enough edge and it good for things like a utility knife, for box breakdown etc.

hmmm, my Ti material is SPEC TI-P99002 ABS5142A aka T-40 (which i think is a grade 2 Ti) so i don't know if it can be done with it (and i don't have anything to carbidize it, or do i? no idea the tools needed for DIY)
Here it is only anodized, the edge is anodized to light blue (λ ~ 530nm)  which gives something like 0.2µm of oxide (approximated from here)

To DIY carbidize you need a dremel engraver or similar, a carbide mill bit (broken ones work great) and a power source that can do around 50v up to 2 amps.

This seems like a very handy little tool, and a lot more functional/better designed than a lot of One Piece Tools out there.

If they ever hit production, let me know- I'd be down for one for sure.

my PC PSUs can give me quite a lot of amps but at 3.3, 5, and 12V, but my other PSUs i have under hand hardly give me half an amp at 50V xD, looks like DIY carbidizing is not for today here :)

My design is totally unprotected -say open-source if you wish-, so anybody can adapt and produce it :)
Another feedback for today: i noticed that the angle of the belt cutter isn't good, it needs a lot more force to cut than traditional ones (because on the others the edge is nearly in the axis of the arm when slicing, here user wrist needs to be bent downwards to get the right cut angle)

I really like this tool. And the idea!

Just a great one. That would work rather well on my keychain. Almost thought about a small series?  :pok: :pok:

4 months later, using the tool daily:
- The box opener works still great, i resharpened it twice on a flat metal surface to keep it's edge
- The belt cutter needed a few more resharpening (a few passes on a cardboard box angle once in a while -like you can do on leather for straight razors-, and voilà! lots of PET packing belts died since the tool was made)
- Ti anodizing didn't wear much -only sharpening scares-
- I din't use the cap lifter enough to say anything about it

This build is far from being something that could be sold or anything, but i'm extremely happy with it for personal usage : It fits my needs very well and i don't think i would change anything but the material (stronger Ti or Steel)

Six months later: first time I use the cap lifter IRL:
It works, But could have been better if I did keep the lifting part squared and "sharp angled" instead of sanding it round ....

No problem. As long as the one you wanna give away has a sharper angled bottle opener we won't complain  :D  :gimme:

Pretty cool idea and execution.

Those inserts on the Sentinel are original or made by you? What is the other SAK?

"inserts" == "pinned brass rods" ? if so, then yes, it is homemade  :ahhh
The other one is a ClassicSD, i'm on a Ti Rambler project now ...
Here is the Sentry WIP (and the scalese for the next Ti Rambler were done that day) http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,64155.msg1213719.html#msg1213719

Thanks! I meant the three holes. Seemed like something inserted in the scale, not drilled. I discovered the thread with all the info on the knife today...

That's kind of intended: the light blue anodizing looks above and not below the surface
