Leatherman MUT Rescue
on: January 28, 2016, 09:55:25 AM
G'Day,

I am a big MUT fan. I have the BO version and it gets used very often.

From time to time I will have a look at the local gumtree website to look for pre-loved or bargain Multi-tools. Yesterday a bloke advertised a SS Mut for a very good price. From the pictures the tool looked a little dirty and was missing the little bit. No broken bits or cracked pliers carcass. I picked the tool up this afternoon as I am looking for a donor tool to try adding a Surge bit exchanger where the current saw is. I got the bit exchanger from another inmate and it should be here in a week or two. I'll do a write-up on that separately.

Back to the MUT. I will add a few posts to post all the pictures.

First up, very dirty. The pouch is missing the back tab, I just unpicked the left overs. The pouch will now be for bag storage only. It is soaking away until tomorrow. The knife blade is very blunt and has some chipping close to the tip and on the serrations. The plain edge bit I should be able to get sharp, but don't know about the serrated bit. The small bit was missing as well as one large bit with the torx side. Luckily I have some spares of both, so no problem here. It has the GOOD clip with a few scratches. The pliers has some marks and a weld dot  :o, but works smooth and nothing scratched inside there. The saw-blade is unused, the carbon scraper new and the disassembly punch had a bit scraped away on the one edge - again no biggie. The rest is just dirty...

I soaked it in very hot soapy water and gave it a very good scrubbing. It looked good already. Next step was to get the plastic bits out and give them a good dose of black rit dye. Same a babola's Black Ninja mod. The bits spent 15 minutes simmering away on the stove and another 15 minutes in the cup. I rinsed them with clean water and they are a black as the Ace of Spades.
Next up was polishing the carbon scraper with Metal polish for a nice shine, the disassembly punch got the same treatment. The clip was removed and cleaned. I was going to replace it but I think that would take some of the "used" patina away. The tool now shows nice ageing and good wear.

What's left:
Restore and Sharpen the blade
Oil everything up and check tightness
Surge saw and file holder mod
Add Vic tweezers - possibly

All up took about two hours. Enjoy the pictures.

Cheers,

Pete

Nice pickup, mate!  :salute:

Looking good overall, nothing you can't fix or mod, indeed.

I especially like those Ninja'd black RIT plastic bits  :tu:

I will go as far and state that MUT is my favourite Letaherman, bar none  8)

Thanks mate,

The Ninja credit is all yours!!!

I received a Surge bit exchanger today from Loki. I am going to try and add it where the saw goes. Pics will follow. It is slowly starting to become my favourite too. I have since removed the clip and that makes it much more comfortable to use, for me at least...

Cheers,

Pete

If you manage to install that Surge blade exchanger it will add a whole new dimension to this already great tool.

That I want to try too...

Just have to get me a MUT :P

@Rit Dye: What kind of colors could you get... could you make it blue / pink?
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

But isn't it depending on the color of the plastic piece? In this case coyote-tan colored pieces.

It will affect the resulting color slightly, yes and you have to account for that. But you counteract it with more concentrated mix. There will always be one prevailing or carrier color, so to speak. You have to mix the dye with that in mind.

Done many different colored G-shock resins in the past, all came out great.

Tried it here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,64616.new.html#new
Sadly not a drop-in mod. Some work will be required as the blade exchanger is "smaller" than the MUT saw and it has some play in the locked position.

One word of advice, don't start with a highly concentrated mix, colour can always be added never taken away. As babola, I have dyed a few G-Shocks and have never had any issues. If the base is not white or transparent there will be a slight influence from it.

Cheers,

Pete

I know this is a really old post, but I’m looking to buy a spare titanium MUT clip, and I noticed you said you removed your clip and carry it without. Any chance you still have your clip, and if so, would you be up to selling it? Thanks!

G'Day,

I do have the clip, it went to another model that came with the steel and plastic clip.

I'm happy to send you the new version if you are interested in that. The titanium one is not available.

Pete
