My first flicky tool
on: February 05, 2016, 08:50:21 PM
Just came this afternoon NOS MP600 BN. Overall I think it is a pretty cool tool. The serrated blade was really dull and the tools on that side were really loose. I sharpened the blade and tightened up the pivots with my homemade engineer pliers. The wire cutters are super sharp and cut paper with ease but lack a hard wire notch. Not a big fan of velcro so it will be riding in a Leatherman sheath. It's not as big or heavy as I thought it would be and I think I'm going to like the BN pliers.  :tu:

Enjoy man.  Yeah it is not as heavy as it looks (a lot of empty space -- not a criticism, the design necessitates it).  In my experience, the MP600 plier heads can't be beat on a multitool.  Because of the thickness of the plier heads, the thickness of the sheet metal, and the design, this is the one tool I have that I have no worries ever about really cranking down on.  I am surprised that the serrated blade was dull out of the box, and that tools were loose.  I've never gotten a Gerber that wasn't wicked sharp, or tight (to start).

I was surprised as well with the serrated blade but the BO coating was intact so it left the factory that way. It was easy enough sharpen though.

I think I know why it was loose. The 3D phillips is bent and gets stuck on the can opener, it's really bad when I tighten it up to be where it should be. I've never seen a bent 3d phillips before.  This isn't normal for a Gerber is it ?

That isn't normal. However it is easy enough to remove and flatten it with a hammer. And pics if you do.   :)

You don't think it would break ?  I'm wondering if it's worth messing with or just return for a replacement.

I would try sending it back.  Honestly, since it is fresh out of the box, not like a warranty replacement for a broken part, I'd try to get Gerber to pay for shipping too.  That is pretty, pretty bad.  I've never seen anything like that, I always thought this was a cast part, I don't even know how that'd happen.  I wouldn't try hammering it I think it would snap.

I got it on E-bay so I might contact the seller to see about a replacement. I think it's a defective forging.

Thanks Z, I'll see if I can send it back because it was obviously a defect. If they won't take it I might take you up on your offer. Now I just have to get it back together

Sorry about the broken phillips. On the upside, I also love Gerbers bluntnose pliers. Most people don't realize how THICK them boys are.    great addition to any collection.

Yeah, I figured it would.     A thick, cast piece like that just won't have much give.  Heck, even once an SAK blade is bent it can be difficult to unbend (and those are thin).  You are usually better just leaving it alone or grinding the bent tip off.

Oh well. Hopefully Gerber replaces it, as it was a defect on their end.  Keep us posted.

Never seen a bent Philips like that before.  The good news is that Gerber have a Warranty department with an excellent reputation.

Just dont forget to tell them you expect the regular wirecutters on the Refurbed tool. Last thing you want is to end up with replacable carbude cutters on that sucker

Was blade all covered in bo? Or did it have shiny bevel? Blade should be sharpened after oxidation, and creating shiny bevel. Othervise it would be dull.

Well good news, just got this e-mail from the seller on E-bay   :tu:

I'll either send this one to Gerber to get fixed or see if someone has a spare BO 3D phillips here.

Glad to hear the seller is putting this right I've just checked the Phillips on the one I received today, and it's perfect. The spacing between it and the adjacent tools is completely uniform over the full length.

Mine too has the BO covered serrations, and the plain blade is a little dull too. Easy fixes though.

I was considering modding it to knifeless, but am now thinking i might leave the tool set on this one exactly as it is  :D
