Leatherman tool stock?
on: February 07, 2016, 04:08:42 AM
Having seen the nice little awl that evil made for his wave a while back, I'm keen on making one for mine >:D . I think I have all the tools to make it, but I have no idea where to get the metal that is the right strength and thickness etc. to make it. Any suggestions?

Get calipers and measure the width of whatever tool you are replacing, order stock in that thickness. Most Leatherman's have a bit of flexibility in how thick the sum of the blades are, so dont sweat if the nearest stock size is .5mm too large.

As for strength.... no idea.

Strength I just want some steel that won't either be to soft or hard to be useful. The steel on the current tools is 420hc i believe, which would probably work fine but I don't know where to find it or what alloys are equivalent (and would probably need similar tampering too?). I have no idea where I would order it from, especially since I only need a small piece.

You're probably best off finding a knife blade of the right thickness you can cut up - a cheap Mora or similar maybe. It's unlikely that you'll find ready-heat treated material to buy in sheet form as, once it's hardened, it's difficult to cut.

Sacrifice an old Wave blade. Cut it slowly and cool often to preserve hardness.

Have a look at the bits that loki-mobile is advertising. Maybe you can get one of the Wave / Charge drivers and re-shape that into an awl. I am getting some stuff from him by the end of the month, happy to add what you want in the parcel. Postage is about 2 weeks usually to Oz.

I have a few old PST drivers, but I don't think they will work with the locking mechanism. If you interested let me know.

Check online too, you can find wave blades here and there.

I might have some black oxide sog parts that could fit if you're interested
