Needed - A dollar's worth of free advice about sheaths
on: February 18, 2016, 05:30:01 PM
I'm in the middle of a quandary right now and hope someone here can help. To start with as most others here I was less than impressed with both the Leatherman nylon and "premium leather" sheaths so I already have a maxpedition single sheath on the way for my Leatherman Surge with a Gerber Carolina Belt sheath accompanying (for the bit kits & extender). I don't mind doubling up except I do particularly since I plan on every day carrying my TOPS B.O.B. Fieldcraft as well. But then I see an online leather shop that sells a  beautiful 85$ case that holds everything including the Surge.
To add to my confusion, I also just bought the Charge TTi which also needs a decent sheath as well. My other option is to order the stand alone Surge and Charge Sheath from the leather shop (75$ total) and use the Gerber nylon for the kits and bit extender. And last thing: I've heard good things about the Leatherman Molle XL sheath for the Surge (which can also fit the kits and extender) but am hesitant because Leatherman seems to be having quality issues no matter what sheath it is. (Skinth is temporarily out because I need a more immediate solution).
HELP!

Welcome!

Can you find a store where you can actually hold the different sheaths and "try" them on, to see which one you're more confortable with? Maybe ask someone you know that has any of those models to lend it to you?...

My experience is with the XL Molle sheath so here are my thoughts.

The sheath is well made for the price I paid.  ( approx 12-15 dollars US ).
The sheath is not made by Leatherman.
The sheath will accommodate the Surge and 2 bit cards plus the extender and extra saw blade or file.  This will be a tight fit but they will all fit.
The elastic side bands will fit a thin flashlight ( my E05 and LD02 ) fit no problem.

I would not hesitate to get the sheath.  I like it very much and use the smaller one for my Wave and 1 bit card as well.

As you can see hopefully the sheaths do differ in small ways.  I'd imagine the years produced has something to do with it.  The velcro field is not cut perfectly but in no way diminishes the effectiveness.  The drain hole is slightly lower on one.  The strap on one is a tad longer than the other.

Not shown is the extender but it will fit as mentioned.  Please note that with all the accessories the sheath will be stuffed and the items will be very tight within.

Using one card in my experience greatly improves how the sheath works.  I also have found I only need one card YMMV.

I like these Leatherman sheaths , room for bit kit and side loops. Would work for your Charge there are also bigger ones for the Surge but they are harder to find.
